You're missing it if you don't read the article from the link that LSUAce007 provided.

I always respected him...
Back in the Curley days, I called his office after we lost to So. Miss, got his secretary on the phone and said I wanted to talk to him. He didn't know me from squat. But his secretary said he was in a meeting and he would call me back. Yea...right
Well, about 3 hours, our receptionist pages me with Joe Dean is on line 1.
Sure enough, it was him. He told me to be patient, a decision was forthcoming.
Not a lot of ADs would do that.
There was a real classy side to him.
And yes...he LOVED LSU !
RIP, Joe... may you hear string music for eternity.

Condolences. Joe Dean was a gentleman who had more friends than most people even know. While I've been a critic of his tenure as A.D., there's no doubt of his deep love of LSU and the great person he was.

Beloved by all SEC fans. Always got a huge reception when he walked in front of the student section at Bama. "Here in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, they call it 'String music'...nothing but the bottom of the sack!" "Reginald King...they call him 'The Mule', John, and he can really fill it up." The most unique voice in all of sports broadcasting. Dick Vitale is not worthy to carry his jock. The greatest basketball TV color guy. Ever. Period. RIP.

RIP Joe Joe

Advocate article on him

quote:

“I remember getting a call from Joe, I think Thanksgiving morning,” Vincent said. “‘Get together all the information you can find on Nick Saban and put it in my box,’” Vincent said Dean told him. “Sure enough Nick Saban was in the office as the next football coach the next week.”
