Why are some of you using this to support your argument? This is a stretch to say the least...had Saban stayed at or returned to LSU, it's likely Bama wouldn't be the power they are now. And it's highly likely Saban at LSU from 2005 till now would have the same achievements if not more.

No I won't. Miles went full retard the day he let JJ back on the team.

I said that very day: our NC hopes are done. Anyone with ANY sense, saw 01/09/12 coming a mile away.

2011 is nothing more than an ice cream sundae with Les' coaching diarrhea on top.

THIS....
quote:

A normal fan would hold the next coach up against the accomplishments of the former...you'd like them to meet and surpass him, assuming he was solid. In any measurable way, Miles has done that at LSU...despite following the first coach in decades that helped bring LSU a national title and national prestige again. And yet, it isn't enough. Instead, Miles is not held up and compared to Nick Saban while at LSU. He's compared to this non-existent Saban at LSU based on the misconceptions LSU fans have that had Saban stayed at LSU he'd have had the same success he's currently having at BAMA. All this despite the fact that Saban's teams only lost less than 3 games a season one time. All this despite the fact that we all know BAMA exists in an entirely different SEC than we do. An SEC with favorable schedules, that gets do-overs, that has the conference office set up in its home state, etc. We seem to forget that simply being "Nick Saban" was not enough to get the SEC to even pay attention to his bitching about having to play the Friday after Thanksgiving. We also seem to forget that once BAMA's coach, the minute they switched the Iron Bowl to that day, he bitched and it immediately was moved back and LSU was thrown onto Friday again. If Miles was being compared to BAMA's coach whileat BAMA, then I could respect that. Miles isn't being compared to Saban as BAMA's coach. If he was, he'd lose but the argument would be close. He's being compared to a fantasy, and in that battle he's never EVER had a shot.

He's 58-17 with one SEC title and one NC appearance. That's better than any other coach in the SEC besides Saban

So you're admitted Miles did not improve, but in fact, regressed.

That's all I wanted to hear. You can throw the "Saban has improved" argument as a defense for Miles out now.

The man has a team that averages 10 wins a season, wins one NC, and played for another. All because of a few close losses each year people think he is an idiot. Is he the best coach in the country? Maybe not, but he is pretty darn good.

People think he's an idiot because of his speaking (in)ability and some questionable game management.
He is proven to be a good recruiter and a player's coach

So your saying Saban has learned as a coach and has gotten OBVIOUSLY better since winning his first national championship.

Why would he, or I, be saying that?

Personally I'm ok with just saying that Saban, as an elite coach, has a MUCH easier time have prolonged success at BAMA than he did at LSU. Being BAMA's coach, with the built in advantages that comes with (I'm not even going to bother to list these again) makes it easier for prolonged success than it is at LSU.

In addition, some fans seem to forget 2004. This was Saban's 5th team and featured a group of guys almost entirely his own. That team needed over time and the help of the gods of filed goal defense to beat an out manned Oregon State team. It lost on The Plains to AU...got prison raped by UGA 45-16, and we all know what happened against Iowa in the bowl game. In year 5, Saban had the team in a position where we had no viable option at QB (5th year Marcus Randall or RS Freshmen Russell of Flynn), had a team that looked unmotivated or unprepared to play games against OSU, UGA, TROY, etc.

But this was 2004...when the LSU fan base had been brow-beaten into submission by Saban into NEVER questioning "The Process." The things which are now pointed out regularly (team playing down to opponents, not prepared, guys leaving early) could not be discussed because to do so was called "catastrophe syndrome."

Personally...from everything I have gathered from talking to people over the years, I think Saban's time here was running out anyway because of his nature. But assuming for a second people could have tolerated him, I see no reason at all that Saban would not have had continued "success" at the level he had already had while at LSU. I can only hope it would have been equal to what we've seen Miles' teams accomplish. To think it would have automatically matched what we've seen him do at BAMA JUST because it's the same coach is just a comical assumption...which by itself would not be that big a deal. The problem is that in making that assumption far too many LSU fans have become jaded to just how good we DO have it, and have worked themselves up into a state where they can never be happy.

Other than the fact that Miles is indisputably the most successful LSU coach ever, we don't have much of an argument. I don't expect you to understand that from your sidewalk.

So if Miles were to be hired in 2000, do you believe he would be as successful as he is today? I would say no. Here is the deal sunshine. When you get handed the keys to the fastest latest greatest car, you're gonna win most races. You're acting as if Nick Saban wouldn't do the same thing and you're right. He would do more! Les Miles didn't build anything here bro, it was built. Bobby Bowden started from scratch and built FSU from the ground up. Eventually after he got up in age, FSU fell off a little, but that happens. So please don't insult Bobby Bowden by comparing him and CLM.

Les Miles at LSU and Bobby Bowden are both all-time top 25 coach/school tenures.

2004 was a season following NFL departures after his first National Title. He was 9-3 that season.

What was Miles' record the season following his first National Title again? Les was 8-5.

I guess if 9-3 seasons taint Saban's legacy at LSU so much...can you explain how Miles had a 3 loss season last year in his EIGHTH season here?

I'm a pretty big Tiger fan, but "fastest latest greatest car" is a tad of a reach in describing LSU football of 02, 03, and 04.

We had 9 L's in that period, one Top 10 team, and one yr with more than 10 wins. We won the BCS in the middle yr, but the other two don't equate to any "fastest latest greatest car" to me.

Taking over for Nick and leading LSU football to its greatest 8+ run in LSU history speaks pretty highly of Les Miles whether or not some on here want to admit it.

Well, then we disagree. Lee was a turnover waiting to happen. The lights were too big for him in that game; he was shell shocked. Miles made the right call. I don't think we beat Alabama with Lee at quarterback during the regular season and we have one less SEC championship for it.
