This where my lack of computer prowess gets me into to trouble. How do I make sure I've done this?

there are multiple ways to do it.

the bitcoin-qt client includes a feature that will allow you to encrypt it, however, that is probably the one you are already using that requires a download of the full blockchain.

you can also create a TrueCrypt container and store your wallet file in there. you really need to do your research in order to do this properly. go ask questions on reddit.com/r/bitcoin and reddit.com/r/bitcoinbeginners

keep this in mind: it may seem difficult to do all this now. and I sympathize. but understand that this is still a very new and developing technology. the infrastructure is getting built from the ground up. it will get easier to use. but right now we are in the innovator/early adopter stage. it's like the internet in the early 90's. sure, it existed, but it was difficult to get onto, required expensive hardware and specialized knowledge. but fast forward a few years, and it got much easier.

so be patient. you are an early adopter.

you call them crashes? why?

i call them popped bubbles that resulted in a post-bubble price higher than the pre-bubble price.

in other words, the growing pains of a small, but growing market.

shite man, just in this calendar year, even with the big April "crash" as you call it, bitcoins are up 2438.462% (from $13 on Jan 1 to $330 today)

oh, and let's not forget that they were worth less than a penny in 2009. shall I calculate the percent increase for that?

Right, the entire world WILL NOT invest in that VOLATILE market. Makes zero sense.

You have to show stability....

Everyone just going to say frick the dollar, euro etc???

Unlikely. If those currencies continue to get selected over digital currencies there should be no worries from the users of the dollar, euro, yen, etc.

The feature that I like about digital currencies is the transfers of funds across the world. It's something that really interest me because Wells Fargo charges me $45 to transfer funds from my bank account to my vendor's bank account in China.

$45 gets really expensive when you have to make several transfers per month.

a sufficiently motivated and funded entity might be able to unmask the owners of bitcoin addresses, but if any precautions are taken by the users, that can get exponentially more difficult and expensive.
Nice to see you finally acknowledge this. In the past you claimed simple precautions made this impossible.

Didn't he say "completely anonymous" many, many, many times? Oh right, yes he did. He's leading these people down the wrong path. As usual.

ETA, but he is at least telling people they could lose all of their money. Which is a BIG chance they take.

You and Poodlebrain both just love to lie.

The only time I ever said "anonymous" was in my first thread about bitcoin. I quickly corrected myself by my second thread and have since referred to it as pseudonymous consistently.

And as for what Poodlebrain said, the only reason I worded it that way is because anything is possible. A person could take every technical measure to protect himself but if a sufficiently motivated and funded entity broke into his home and hid cameras in his office or put a keylogger on his system then he could be deanonymoized.

The problem that you, Poodlebrain, and others have is that you truly do not grasp the technology. You don't even understand how simple tactics could be employed that could give even plausible deniability (enough to withstand the legal "beyond a reasonable dount" standard), and that complex tactics could lead to full anonymity. You refuse to acknowledge that.

I don't even care about the tech. There are soooo many other things to worry about with this "currency". But keep fighting the fight.
