You act like sustaining greatness that he inherited is easy.

This is the part that amazes me. To be able to completely transition from one coaching staff to another, completely differnt mindset, philosiphy, everything, yet not even blink in recruiting and still maintain success at an unprecedented level is fricking impressive.

Reeeeeally stretching hard to discredit Les, there. You're agenda is shining through quite bright.

How? I am realistic. Les is a good coach, but overrated. Other schools' bad hires shouldn't blind us to what Les is as a coach and that he is overpaid.

As others have mentioned, he's actually #5 in coaching salary this season when you look at actual salary and not buyouts those other two coaches don't even see.

If you are generous and rank LSU #26 in 2008 (they were unranked), Les' teams have average a rank of 13 in the last 5 years, and it likely only goes up slightly after this year.

So we are paying him top 5 money and have been since 2008 to average a rank of 13th over the 6 years this team will be definitively his own.

Oh, that's nice. How has every other aspect of their team done? Would you trade the current state of LSU's program with OU's? If so, this conversation is over.

As of this moment? No, I wouldn't because LSU is a much better university to coach at than OU. Greater talent to pick from in state than OU.

But just because OU has been on the decline and mistakenly overpaid Stoops doesn't make Les being overpaid any worse.

OK - what are the average final rankings of the other teams with these exponentially better coaches?

I am not gonna do the research, but I doubt there are 5 teams in the country with a higher average rank than 13 over the last 5 years. Please prove me wrong.

And why did you choose 08? Oh because 05-07 doesn't help your cherry picked stats argument.

Oh ok. When working out Bama's averages, don't include the 14-0 #1 2009 season. Shula's players.

And don't include last year for Ohio state. Tressel's players.

And Les got lucky in 2007 and needed help, so let's strike out all but 1 of Saban's titles at Bama. And his title at LSU while we're at it.

Also, it would be misleading if the buyouts were NOT included in the numbers. I don't care if Bielema sees a dime of that money, the fact of the matter is that Arkansas is paying more than $5 million dollars for their coach this year. Who is getting a better ROI, LSU or Arkansas??

re: LSU's Miles is 7th highest paid head coach

Looking at 2008 was reasonable. It's a five year window for all the teams.

I've only evaluated a few teams, but based on final Coaches' poll rankings since 2008, the following teams' final rankings have average:

1) Bama - 3.8
2) Oregon - 6
3) Boise St - 8.8
4) tOSU - 9.6
5) TCU - 10.8
6) OU - 11
7) UF - 13
8) LSU - 13.4
9) Stanford - 14
10) UT - 15.4
11) OSU - 16.2
12) Va Tech - 16.4

And this isn't looking at every team. This is just looking at a handful, so 4 teams have average top 10, and remember this is assuming a rank of 26 for unranked teams.

Again, I am not saying Les sucks. He's a good coach, but he is not deserving IMO of his salary.

For this season, clearly LSU, but that said, Bielema is in somewhat of a rebuilding job and that buyout money should be spread out across his salary if they are going to count it in that way. Fact remains, I doubt people expected much from Arkansas in year one of a rebuild, much like at Bama in year one of Saban's tenure where they went 7-6.

Oregon OSU and FLA had multiple coaches over that span. So only 2 programs (Bama and Oklahoma) have coaches with better average final rankings over the last 5 years. I'd say Les is getting paid fair market value.

So even with a down year and transition year, UF still remained higher.

Oregon had one year without Chip Kelly as HC and he was their OC that year, so I'd say it's reasonable to count that year since it was their lowest ranking in that time frame.

Also, I added several other teams that outperformed LSU including Boise St and TCU that both outperformed LSU, putting LSU at 8th best ranking so far, and I have done a full analysis.

You also gave UF 2010 and LSU 2008 a ranking of 26... And the dog shite 2011 UF team skews their ranking because you have to give them a 26 too.

Jesus. Let's keep the analysis to real football teams.

You would really rather have Boise and TCU seasons the last 5 years than LSU?

Big 6 conference teams only.

Your argument about 2007 is BS. There were only 3 teams that year, if I remember correctly, that had 1 loss or less. Ohio State, Kansas and Hawaii. LSU handed Ohio State their hats and Georgia slaughtered Hawaii and the great Colt Brennan. Kansas had one loss, but they are still Kansas. VT had 2 losses and finished 3rd and one of the losses was 48-7 to LSU. I grow tired of people saying we were lucky or backed into that game. Plenty of teams had the chance to be there and could not close the deal.

overrate him

How in the world can one look at national rankings of #3, #5, #1, #17, #8, #2, #12, and a current #10 and conclude a coach putting up those national rankings is only able to do that cause he found LSU in good shape 9 yrs ago???

Miles is the most successful coach in LSU history, but he's overrated cause another coach 9 freaking yrs ago deserves the credit for the Miles success....please, give me a freaking break.

Someone would have to be seriously college football mentally challenged to buy into that BS.

Or a Bama mole.

Again, I laugh at your biased ways of propping up Miles.

So let's see... Boise State has had seasons of 12,14,12,12,and 11 wins along with a 4-1 bowl record and a BCS bowl win.

Les hasn't won a BCS bowl since 2007 and is 2-3 in bowls from 2008-2012.

TCU has 11, 12, 13 and 11 wins along with a 3-2 bowl record, 2 BCS bowls and 1 BCS bowl win.

I am not claiming they are great, but they've done better than less in those regards.

Are they better teams than LSU in that time frame? Outside of the last two years, I honestly could see them beating LSU.
