So much anger in this thread. Can't we all just get along?

And yet you're being owned. You don't even know what this is even about. Was it a bad accident involving head trauma?

As for the decline in prevalence, I think that has to do more with it being seen as an antiquated round more than anything.

You mean it doesn't have to do with the fact that big ammo makers have temporarily suspended making that caliber among others? Seems that would have more to do with its shelf presence more than anything.

I have had no trouble locating .30-30 at all honestly. So, no, I don't think that is the issue.

Top ejection just sucks if you don't want open sights. The scope in that picture is probably a side-mount. It's hard to tell from the pic.

Clames, I want to help you, but I can't. The .30-30 is not a good caliber for 200+ yard shooting. It'll do it, but it shouldn't be asked to do it. Just like a .45-70 shouldnt be asked to kill buffalo at 500 yards.

Try and at least quantify why. I mean Hornady makes ammo that puts 200yds easily in range with more than enough energy for a clean kill. Hand loaders have been doing it for years. Explain, using actual facts and numbers and not the "sage" advice someone else told you. Until I see someone post some numbers then all you have is hearsay which doesn't mean shite with rifle ballistics.

as a person who has shot a side-mount, lever action 30-30 for 15+ years, there is no way I'm taking a 200+ yard shot

I probably wouldn't even take a 150 yard shot

Because there is just no good reason to do it. The woodwright's shop loves using foot powered saws and lathes, but even he knows there are better tools for the job now.

That is the kind of scope mount I had on my old 94. I liked it with iron sights, but that side mount was awkward as hell. I still wish I had kept that gun.

I get that it CAN kill out to 300 yds. The generally accepted ft-lbs of energy to kill a deer sized animal is 900 ft-lbs, and at 300 yds the Hornady 160gr LEVERevolution has 1025. Great, you CAN kill a deer at that distance. That doesn't mean you should be shooting a caliber that drops 12.3" from 200-300 yds at animals past 200 yds. CAN it kill them? Sure. CAN a really experienced hunter who is VERY familiar with the ballistics of their ammo make that shot? Sure. SHOULD you be using that caliber to routinely make shots that far when other, much better rounds are available for the same or cheaper? Probably not.

That's fine for shorty because you aren't going to burn enough powder for a longer shot but when you have 20 or so inches of barrel to work with you certainly have the option. 200yds is practically point-blank for my 30-06 as it is for any full power rifle.

re: .30-30 Winchester. Why so unpopular now?

I hunt with a .30-30 a whole lot and shoot it wayyyyy more than most people. I put at least a box through it a year and I'm always shooting different stuff out of it because the gun is very tolerant of different loads and shoots everything well. I don't bring that gun when I think I might shoot over 100 yards if I can help it.

Hornady squishy tips are not good bullets. I've yet to see one do what it was supposed to do in .30-30, .35 rem, .444, .357, or .45-70. I see a whole lot of shot deer every year and pay attention to stuff like this. The only people I know still using them are .45-70 and .444 handi rifle shooters, and most of them are unhappy with them.

Hornady squishy tips shouldn't be used at any range. They suck. That said, I don't think any .30-30 load should be used at 200+ yards for a multitude of reasons...

1) Most people shouldn't be taking 200 yard shots with any caliber, much less one that lobs bullets rather than sends them on a rope.

2) Most factory loads are pop gun loads and don't bring much with them past 100 yards. The trajectory and velocity both suffer big time due to the flat/round nose of most bullets. The hornady squishys address this, but they don't do their job when they get where they're going.

3) (looking for trajectory charts)

To you maybe (your opinion again) but those of us with (recent) experience have plenty of reasons. I for one don't see a good reason to use a full power rifle when I have one that will do just fine at that range.

Great, that doesn't change the fact that you're doing it with an obsolete caliber and gun design. I mean, many guys still love the 1911......
