Lots of great answers!
Another one I thought of was Deadwood.
Probably just memorable to me because I love hearing people call each other "cock suckers".

I agree with most people on the Shield. Nip/Tuck also had a great pilot despite what became of the rest of the show.

I loved the 1st episode of Justified. From the opening scene with Raylan and the Miami gun thug, to our first introduction of Boyd with a rocket launcher blowing up a pot church, to our first dialog between Raylan and Boyd, to the interaction between Raylan and Dewy, to the final showdown between Raylan, Boyd, and Ava. There was so much win in that pilot. The middle of that 1st season might have not lived up to future seasons, but that 1st episode and the last episode of the 1st season were extremely good.

Is the original Battle Star Galactica the only pilot to be made into a feature motion picture? I would say that is one of the "greatest ever pilot episodes".
Cheers is up there.
Miami Vice and Hill Street Blues are good mentions... NBC really blasted the other alphabets during the 80's with their iconic content... I would say HBO is the closest thing today.
I don't know about Mash though... throwing a party and raffling off Lt. Dish to fund raise money for the korean house boy to go to school in America... is that 1972 ground breaking stuff???
It's also funny to think how Mash would be perceived today if the black guy, Spearchucker, would have become a main character. Would the pc police killed the show despite its anti-war liberal bend?
