GrandDad, you should see the parties the Med, Law, Pharm & Dental Schools throw.

With the obvious changes in our total society and culture it is easy to understand the picture you paint. Not that those things haven't gone on to some extent since I was @ LSU in the 60s. With the wonderful successes of the program over the last 12 years or so (after ALL the bleak years!) it's sad to see the social changes undermine the experience.

Living outside the US for over 5 years now it becomes so much apparent...

My two cents...

I want to apologize for the behavior of students so far this year. After going to Starkville and witnessing a fight between our students and some of their older fans, I was truly embarassed. Combine that with the F-you Florida/Auburn/whoever chants and STTDB, it's pretty hard to get fired up. Personally I'm so embarassed of these chants and I refuse to yell along with them. The Geaux Tigers chant and other chants that are such classics are done so quickly and rushed that they don't sound good at all any more. I'm ready for the student section to be rocking again and for the entire stadium to follow suit. Enough of the vulgar chants and drunken slurs at the opponent, let's get in their heads with an absolute roar on every down. The only reason I can give for student's leaving early is for the non-SEC games where we have to sit for 2 and a half hours before the game just to get a seat. For Florida, however, there's no excuse. I may be one of the few who gets embarassed by vulgar chants and shows up early for the games, but we aren't all just dumb college kids who don't know better.

Go sit with the women and old folk. You're obviously too delicate a flower for the student section.

The band cheers aren't rushed, they go the tempo the band plays them. They also need to be quick because you don't play music when you team is calling plays

I disagree with number 3.
The current student body is the best behaved in my lifetime. Hell, those of us that were at LSU in the 70's and 80's that are honest, will tell you we were much, much worse than you can even imagine.
I loved my years at LSU but we weren't treated like children by the administration. We were looked upon as being adults because our parents were born during the Great Depression and fought in WWII.

Because of the success of LSU, it is almost as if Tiger fans expect a blowout in every game except Alabama and the occasional SEC opponent like Georgia or A&M. I can feel the lack of enthusiasm in the student section every single play. Even on third down, the stadium gets loud, but there's nothing truly deafening or crazy like the "loudest stadium in the nation" should have. I truly believe fans don't see a reason to get loud because we are overly confident and spoiled by the success of the team in recent years. We simply assume we will win handily, and when a touchdown comes there's more of a sigh of relief than enthusiasm.

Should we start losing to correct this? Fans may be spoiled and expect a win but I don't believe we take it for granted. No one in my section ignores the game or fails to cheer or gripe after a play. Maybe people in your section are busy talking, texting, drinking and just fail to pay attention so they don't cheer. I think that's generational. Older tiger fans I see are locked in on the game to the point of over analyzing and ignoring everything else around them.

Most of these problems can be attributed to some of your generation's ADD problems, want for instant gratification and lack of appreciation of tradition. I'm not sure the administration can do anything worth a damn besides going back to the days of free student tickets. You seem to be well ahead of the curve and well spoken. Hope your thoughts rub off on the student section as a whole. Great post.

All student sections have immaturity. The last 5 years, and especially more recently, the students are deplorable.

How old are you? I was at LSU in the 80's with Stovall, Arnsparger and Archer as coaches. If you think today's students are deplorable then you would have called for a ban of LSU football games with the behavior of the students in my day.

While I don't really have a problem with students acting like students, imo the only way to stop this section from chanting things like STTDB is to penalize the team on the field. This would put a quick end to the problem.

Quit reading after you mentioned the price of tickets. LSU has cheaper tickets when compared to several SEC schools.

I sure hope people don't say "Go to hell Ole Miss" this weekend. That's the kind of classlessness that doesn't need to be showcased to other fan bases.

I agree with everything said so far except for this. Our fan base has most definitely lost class over the years but this is one chant that has been around for generations. It's not sexually explicit nor to vulgar. One part of our repertoire that is close to the line but hasn't quite crossed it.

We have yet to have a true night game (it was raining) against a formidable ranked opponent. And also we held Florida to 6 points because of how rowdy we were this past Saturday during the DAY. Tiger Stadium is and will always be the loudest in the country!

70's checking in here. Yes, that went on in the 70's too. Plus, we had idiots who though it was cute to throw empty whiskey and vodka bottles at the other team's cheerleaders when they came across the stadium to do a cheer in front of our student section (yes, they really used to do that, and yes, we really were able to sneak in fifths of liquor).

I hated the boorishness of LSU students then and hate it now. There is a line between being a raucous, yelling, emotional fan and just being a dick and gratuitously yelling at the refs to try to be funny for those around you.

More police and more rules is NOT the answer. Peer pressure is. Once enough students call these dicks out a few times, these cowards will stop and everyone will have a better time.
