If you are owning someone and are scoring at will I don't see how taking a knee is more embarrassing than putting up 100.

The team is basically saying we are done owning you, lets call it a night.

i don't know, put me in the camp that it's worse.

especially kneeling at the 1.

scoring is just saying "if you can't stop us, it's not our fault" like state this yr.

but kneeling so close to scoring is like pity. it's what you would do if you were playing girls or the handicapped.

Zach was robbed. He scored on that play!

he sure was, and sure did. I was shocked they got the call wrong to begin with. there was a good pic of it somewhere that has the ball inside the pylon, can't find it anymore.

eta:

found this, not quite the one I was looking for but... #MettScored

at the time i thought it was, but since then i've heard it was punishment for zach calling his own naked bootleg in the huddle that almost scored.

I cannot believe this is accurate. If true, its one of the dumbest moves ever by a head football coach. Even for Les the punishment angle is blockheaded.

We were 1 yard away from handing Ole Miss their worst home loss in history.

why? i think it's a great message.

in bball if you're up by 30 and you call 4 corners and your PG is jacking up 3's, he needs a message/lesson.

I would hope every opposing coach knows by now that once LSU feels like they have a comfortable lead and the outcome is NOT in doubt, LSU runs the ball every play. This has to jump out at them on film right?
I'd really rather put backup players in and run a regular offense to reward them for hard work at practice and to help them learn the game so that they can step in with experience if and when a starter has to leave due to injury.

Then take him out of the game. I seriously doubt if Mett incurred Les' wrath and remained on the field. Hell, Mett was laughing on the sideline afterwards.

To whom? Your potential recruits? who wants to play for a coach who will embarrass you on national TV?

I don't believe it was a punishment either.

Saints did it to the Cowboys

NOW PAYTON GOES TO KNEEL-DOWN MODE, with 2:45 to go. They’re not going to try to score! I don’t know what’s more humiliating, scoring to make it 49-17 or this gesture of pity. NBC is showing Parcells’s sour puss on the sideline. Two-minute warning.

i get what you're saying, but usually a backup comes in by 1) design 2) injury (in which case he has time to warm up). backup probably wasn't even ready to come in on a ticking play clock. i know he's coming in to handoff but still. most subs are ready or are told to be ready. they had no plan to use backup then.
making them take knees is punishing the whole class for something they went along with.

ever seen kids get in trouble as a group? that's not an uncommon response.

embarrass? like when a player disregards a call and takes the game into his own hands when said game is out of hand already? that's not embarrassing the coach?

you can't see someone like saban talk to player like he's sub-human on the sideline and make that statement.

Yes, embarrass. If this was indeed a punishment then how could being disciplined in front of a national audience be viewed as anything but embarrassing?

Les is goofy but he's not cruel.

well mostly bc it wasn't even viewed as a punishment by the cfb audience. it was viewed as mercy kneel on the 1 vs a hapless opponent.

i don't see how it's cruel. you go against a coach, you suffer some kind of repercussion. the game was out of hand. you guys can't run the play as called, we'll give it to the other team.

i don't even view the crime or punishment as that serious. as was said, mett was laughing about it afterwards.

That's what leads me to believe it was more a case of Les truly feeling he was doing a noble thing by taking a knee rather than an attempt to send a message to Mett.

I wouldn't want to try to get inside the mind of Les Miles but I suspect if he were truly angry with his QB then Mett would have come off the field and spoken too in private. Taking a knee with five minutes to play just to discipline a single player is extreme IMHO.

I have never been more embarrassed for a team than in the 1st quarter of that game.

I was at a bar/restaurant watching the game. An Ole Miss fan and his girlfriend/wife were at a table a few over from me. They barely got through their 1st pitcher of beer before I heard him say "frick this I'm out" and left some money on the table.

This. I doubt if it was intentional but its flat out disrespecting to the other team. No way Les takes that risk just to discipline one player.

Les thought he was doing the right thing by not scoring.
