What the? Why would Ole Miss look unprofessional?

Seriously, write University of Mississippi instead of Ole Miss on your resume.

Or you could be a complete fool and say you had a Vardaman scholarship. That would guarantee you don't get hired. If you do, you probably don't want to work there.

Well I wouldn't write Ole Miss b/c it's not the school's name.

Of course if it was changed to Ole Miss like I suggested I don't see why it would be unprofessional at all.

Yeah, I can see the point in changing that. But you sure as frick don't need a 'Sensitivity and Respect Committee' (or whatever it was) to tell you that it needs to be done.

Then why hasn't it been done yet?

Seems pretty obvious that Vardaman is not someone who should be honored in anyway.

Here we go again. Everything that us vanilla faces do is racist. Doesn't matter what it is, as long as an urbanite claims racism, it usually automatically becomes racist.

And if you say it's not racist, well in turn you also are racist also

Maybe close the school, sell everything, divide up the money for reparations?

Marketing, too many names, and confused opposing "fans" are all BS excuses. It's simple. A small group of people are offended or pretend to be offended and they expect the majority of people to be forced to bend to their will.
It's the same as people saying we should do away with Christmas because it upsets a few people. Where does this stop?
The PC police and people in general should stop crying all the time about things that don't apply to them.
If you don't like the name Ole Miss then don't attend the school. Simple.

That school keeps getting effed more and more and its unfortunate. Colonel Reb was a cool mascot....from a football standpoint I honestly don't know how they recruit black athletes.

re: Committee tells Ole Miss to get rid of "Ole Miss", symbols, and change names

Dr RC has very good points about branding—it's worth noting but I don't think it's necessary to change it. Ole Miss is a strong, consistent brand even if there is some confusion. OMLandshark is right that Ole Miss is a good brand and there's nothing wrong with having a brand name that's different from the official name, but he either doesn't know anything about marketing or is just too stubborn to acknowledge Dr RC's valid points.

Cal has a similar issue. The athletic teams have always been called California or Cal, but almost nobody outside of the Bay Area knows that Cal = UC Berkeley. The academic side is now making it even worse by emphasizing the world-famous Berkeley brand and de-emphasizing University of California. But it's fine, there's no changing it. One difference between the two schools is that on the academic side, UC Berkeley doesn't use the Cal logo, but on the UofM academic site, you see the term Ole Miss in the header, and the Ole Miss logo is at the bottom of the page, so the Ole Miss brand is more general to the whole university. I like it, and I think Cal should do something similar.

However, it boggles my mind why (some) southerners cling to the Confederate flag and rebel image. Secessionists rejected the US Constitution and as such, are just as bad as the dreaded Commies. And celebrating a way of life where you profited form slave labor is pathetic. You traitors lost, get over it. So while I'm fine with the Ole Miss branding, I think the Rebel name and imagery should be changed.

frick ole miss/ university of Mississipp And everything associated with the school. I personally dont care if they decide to change the names or not. Alot of black students go to the school so obviously theyre not offended to much. I wonder how is james meridith honored on that campus though.

Yeah man, James Vandarman wasn't really racist at all! Everyone is just making that up.

And by using terms like "urbanite", you're just proving their point.

No one is clinging to slavery. What you have to understand is all these schools in the southeast were founded in the late 1800's. Therefore a lot of traditions remain from that time period. No one had a problem with these things for almost 150 years . Why now? Why does every detail of that time period have to be about slavery?

I do not care what the do in Oxford. What I do not understand is people who apply today's mindset against what people did 150 - 200 yrs ago.

There are buildings named after people on various college properties because they like endowed them with land and or money.

Duke should be shuttered because big tobacco while we ae at it. MTSU better look in the rearview mirror becaus ethe sensitivity committee will go there next.

Why do people still celebrate Columbus Day? Didn't he kill Indians and steal their lands?

Because the majority of high school students these days know jack shite about recent history much less history that took place over 150 years ago.

I wonder if the town of Vardaman is named after this same fellow?

From what I can tell, he was a southern politician who was only famous for being racist. His nickname was "The Great White Chief".

It's odd that an educational institution names a building after him, when he was vehemently against blacks being educated.

No where in that article did I read they suggested getting rid of the name "Ole Miss". Your OP is a lie.

I can understand changing the name of Vardaman Hall, but removing "Ole Miss" from everything and insisting on The University of Mississippi is just silly.
