The GF is in her first year right at Shreveport right now. She studies a lot--supposedly (physicians, feel free to tell me I'm wrong) they have to learn 1/2-2/3 of what you learn in 4 years of med school in about 15 months. She shouldn't have trouble finding a job though

ETA: ME grad student making ~14000/yr in assistantship pay. Just accepted an offer for drilling engineering at 97k/year

I'm not a physician, but you are wrong.

They have to learn 1/2-2/3 of what a med student has to learn in 2 years...in 15 months.

The doctors I know tell me that pa's "don't know shit" when they graduate. (Sorry...not trying to insult your girlfriend). But they get paid a lot. I have to look for a more lucrative career now so I can try and pay for my two nephews college education.

I wondered this myself when all my friends started making money this past summer...but the MS is only taking me another year and I really like research, so it's cool

This may very well be true--I think the program is really rushed, especially when compared to MD's. Part of that could be eliminated by not requiring so many different clinicals--they do like 9 different rounds over 12 months. It seems like you don't have enough time to learn each specialization. This is all coming from an mere observer...

Yeah that makes sense. Not set in stone or anything. I would have to retake some easy courses which is a pain in the ass.

More like 1/5 of what we learn in two. Then we have two more years of clinicals and a minimum of 3 yrs of residency. 2nd yr med students don't know shite and NP's and PA's much less. I'm not against using them, it's the future. I have a new NP I'm breaking in. She needs to make sure she starts with a doc that will help her along once she gets out. I told mine that we'll treat her first year or two as a "residency". I go behind her on all except the most basic things.

Not having to know a lot seems like a perfect career for me.

It's not bad. She'll be making $100-150k within the next couple yrs with no call and no real responsibility. My bro is a nurse anesthetist and makes about $300k. And a lot less school and debt compared to an anesthesiologist.

Umm, No. Three didactic semesters compared to 4.5 for a med student, then a year or so of clinicals compared to 2 years for med students.
NP school is only requires 700-1000 clinical hours vs 2500 for PA, and about 3500 for a med student. There is no biochem, histology, immunology etc, basically all the background medical science other than anatomy and physiology.

I agree that you don't know shite coming out of school.

That is exactly how it should be- which makes it scary when NPs could basically practice independently right out of school.

My mom is a nurse amesthetist and makes about 125k. Those numbers seem high.

The $160-215k was with paid overtime. His base was like $135k I believe. Helps to work in an area of shortage and he was taking call the others didn't.

Working for himself now, he can make bank. Granted, his current situation is not typical. But I know of a few cRNA's that work for themselves and make that or close to it. Of course, that's just what they tell me. My mom does my bro's billing for him. So, I don't doubt his.

re: What do you do, and how much do you make?

45k, purchasing agent at a chemical plant.

Went to school for Comm Studies (waste) so I had to start from the bottom. Got out in 08, couldn't find work so I sold furniture for 2 years (strict commish - worst job ever.) Got my first real job working as recruiter at a large staffing company making about $60k but the stress of dealing with peope not going to work/employers calling at all hours of the night were too much. Moved on to a local steel company doing purchasing for about $36k. That's how bad I couldn't wait to get away from staffing. Came over here in February. My job in this area should pay more but they based their offer on what I was making at my old job so I kind of screwed myself.

Have great insurance, 401k, work 730-4 M-F, little stress, etc. I'm also in LC so I know there will be room to grow either here or at one of the new projects that will come up. Still, making this little at 27 makes me feel inadequate.

Wife makes about $70k but after student loans, it's closer to $50k
