re: EBR Sheriff's Deputy Dead after Crash

quote:

The Advocate reports he was not on duty.

An early report in this thread indicated that he was turning around to chase a speeder, but perhaps he was actually just driving home from work--since he was still in an official Sheriff's Office vehicle, I'm not sure if that would fully count as "in the line of duty" or not and if that qualifies to have his name inscribed on the local law enforcement memorial behind City Hall. Regardless, thoughts and prayers for the family and friends.

It is always tough to lose a fellow officer. We have a closer bond than most other jobs and even we lose one it hurts a lot. Prayers sent to EBR SO and to his family and friends.

Woke up to texts about this this morning.

Can't fricking believe it. The guy knew how to make a person laugh.

He was a great friend and even posted here on TD.... I don't want to post his username incase he didn't want it known, but we lost a fellow TDer last night. RIP man.

I am not sure if compliment or insult.

This law enforcement officer had friends here. It was a time to be respectful or, if that was not an option to a poster, to be quiet.

I do not like our lack of common courtesy.

A reminder that at any time it may be our last hour, and a reminder to live life a little fuller today. RIP young man. Prayers to his family and friends.

Well said...
We take so much for granted.
Very sad to hear what happened, sounds like a great guy.

Agree.

Read in Advocate. Sounded like he was T-boned by someone. Article didn't say anything about him turning to chase a speeder. Bet the person in the other car was texting or fooling with phone and ran through a red light or stop sign. What do you think? Very sad. In my experience, his family, especially his mother, just entered the gates of hell and she will not escape until death takes her away!

re: EBR Sheriff's Deputy Dead after Crash
quote:

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Hamilton was driving a fully marked 2009 Chevrolet Impala Sheriff’s unit northbound on Joor Rd. At the same time, 26 year old Gloria Burrell of Zachary was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer southbound on Joor Rd. For unknown reasons, Hamilton lost control of his unit and crossed into the southbound lanes of travel. Hamilton overcorrected to the right and upon doing so his Impala was struck on the driver’s side by Burrell’s Explorer.

Isn't there a center turn lane on Joor Rd. near Mickens seperating the traffic?

Wonder if he was playing on his computer in the Sheriff's unit or speeding like most other cops around Baton Rouge.

Or reading the OT. Someone said he posted here. I wonder if the OT has ever killed anyone.

Nope. People who aren't paying attention kill people. Speeding simply makes it harder to react when you do make a mistake.

ETA: If anything thinks I'm flaming the LEO here, I'm not, just making a general observation.

re: EBR Sheriff's Deputy Dead after Crash
Or he fell asleep at the wheel because we don't pay LEO's jack shite so they have to work extra jobs (where he was coming from) to make ends meet. Who else here works a full time professional job and then has to work another job(s) to support his family? It's not right and I wouldn't be one bit surprised if the investigation turns up that he worked sixty hours or more last week.

BTW, most of the legit gripes on the OT regarding LEO's are due to the quality of personnel who take the job for the miserably low pay. Then there are dedicated professionals who do the work DESPITE the crap pay. You want educated and professional police? Put your taxes to work paying them.
