12 gauge is overkill for doves (and most things) IMO.

You're right I think it has more to do with weight and barrel length than it being a pump. I've hunted doves with a pump for years.

Just don't know why they said to use a 20 semi over a 12 pump
cause if you got a good dove field, your shoulder will be black and blue with the 12 pump.

this is counter intuitive, but the most doves I ever killed in 1 hunt was with a single shot 20GA.

Because they feel the whole world should conform to their way of thinking. Plus with that 30" full choked 12 ga you'd be rolling them doves before their little pea shooters could reach them.

They said it because they are big pussies. And they're worried about you reaching out and touching the birds before they have a shot

I brought my Browning 12 pump with a 30" barrel and was told by my dad and another guy that it's not a good idea.... why? I took their advice and shot one dove

You ask this question then are a bit of an a-hole.

I don't know why your pops told you that, you can shoot whatever you want, but was it a choke issue?

It has zero to do with it being a pump or the barrel length, if it does your Dad and other fellow are just as clueless. There is some argument for shorter barrels being easier to swing, but it aint like a 30 inch barrel pump cant be a dove killing machine.

Basically your question is not answerable because it makes zero sense. Sounds basically like two guys with little knowledge talking to another.

It all depends on what kind of choke was in the gun. I prefer a 26" or 28" barrel for dove hunting. To me it's just easier to get a shorter barrel swung around on those little bastards.
