it seemed like the writers looked up and said "oh shite, this is the last season, we need to write an ending!!"
They wrote themselves into a corner years ago when they filmed the scenes with the kids so more like they needed a lot of filler and then had to make it all work with the ending they already filmed.

With the way they ended the show, no way could you say that Tracy was his soulmate. Just another time Ted fell hard and fast for a girl. They got knocked and he eventually gave in to getting married. Then he goes back to robin? They made it feel like the mom was just another stepping stone fling
well if your take on this is popular then yes, i totally understand why people hated the finale.
but to me, ted and tracy were soulmates. but she died. people die. if they ended up being together at the end, then people would criticize the fact that they spent 9 seasons with the gang and only one about the mother and show was supposed to be about her.
the reveal in the finale is the kids figuring out this is not a story about how i met your mother all along. it's a story about my past before you guys came around and my relationships with my friends and robin. and to subconsciously ask permission to move on six yrs after his wife dies.
the kids know/knew their mother. they did not know what their father's life was like before they and tracy came along.

I don't really believe that because the kids know all of "the gang". And if they knew "the gang" their whole lives then I'm sure they've heard many of the stories Ted just told them.
And that further bolsters the idea that this whole story of "how I met your mother" was nothing more than Ted trying to make a case for himself as to why he should date Robin. It was never about the mother but about him laying the groundwork to ask the kids' permission to date her.

I agree with this 100%.
Ted obviously cared more for Tracy than anyone else. She is the only person that was able to get him to forget about Robin. People saying that Robin was his love and Tracy was his consolation prize have it backwards.

I remember people commenting on this in past seasons. The writers were in a lose-lose situation with some fans. The finale is not something I will watch many times, but I was happy with it. I think the finale tied in with the first episode better than most series finales. The pilot starts with Ted telling his kids a story that begins with him meeting and falling for 'Aunt Robin'. The finale ends with the kids calling him out b/c the whole story he told wasn't about their mom, it was about Aunt Robin.

I have no problem with Ted and Robin ending up together AT ALL.
My problems come with how they built up to and presented that ending in the finale, but also what they did in the years since they shot the kids reaction in season 2.
It's not really a plot flaw, but a storytelling one.

Posted this in the other thread, but will put it here as well for people that laughed off the stupid petition.
Well, HIMYM knows they fricked up and want to sell HIMYM DVDs, directly from Carter Bays twitter

If you didn't like the finale, I guess that happens. We tried something and it didn't connect with you. I hope we're still friends.

So anyway, here's a bit of news: 16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings.
quote:
We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series.

We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too.

We're going to include that version on the Complete Series DVD as an alternate finale to How I Met Your Mother.

I would have had a scene where te is talking with Lily and Marshall, and they give him the whole six year speech, not the kids. Then he has the sky conversation, then goes to see Robin. Then they cut bak to him at the train station, do the TM scene, and then cut to a huge montage of all the close encounters they had. That's how I met your mother
Amen

I watched this show from the very first episode, but quit after about 4 or 5 seasons. Lily was a selfish bitch, Ted was a pussy, Robin was annoying (but hot). Barney was the best part of the show. It was just too drawn out and I had too many other shows on my list
Over the last couple seasons, I have tried to read some of these threads to see if I should get back into it and even watched a show here and there. Just never brought me back.
Anyway, I watched the finale and I have to say; it blew. Sounds like everyone really likes Tracy and yet they give her and Ted a couple minutes screen time together and then she dies. WTF?
And to have Marshall still get to be a judge was ridiculous. Again, Lily is a count. Robin was a self-centered bitch. Ted is still a dumb arse, but at least he finally got it right...only to have that go away quickly and he gets back with Robin? Really?
I don't get how these show runners and writers start off with unbelievable shows, can have all this time to end a series properly, and they completely frick it up.. Yes, I'm talking about Dexter too
Now I don't think I will go back and watch the few years I missed. Should I watch this final season though to meet the mom?

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
Can't seem to find a new series to watch so I decided to finish off HIMYM. Skipped the last 2 or 3 seasons.
I've always somewhat liked the show but never watched it religiously.
I was sick for a few days and had nothing to do but lounge about, so I burned through the whole series.
I like parts of the finale and dislike parts of it. That's life. Life is messy.
Even with an hour, I think they rushed the finale a bit. The divorce seemed to happen out of nowhere.
I liked seeing Barney change for Robin so the backsliding and divorce bugged me a bit. Once again, real life is messy. 50% of marriages end in divorce.
Changing for his daughter would have been interesting to see over the course of a season and not just one forced scene in the bar.
I initially wasn't a fan of Tracy but by the end, she seemed perfect for Ted. I would have liked to see more of her.
Never understood the Lily hatred on here, but marathoning the whole show, it is obvious she was the weakest character.....sonofabitch! Bitch keeping Marshall from the judgeship so she could prance around Italy pissed me off.
As much of a douche as Ted could be, he also ended up with some of the most poignant moments.
A few days ago, I wasn't remotely sad to see the show end, but after the marathon, I'll miss the gang. Not the greatest finale but also not terrible. I avoided the spoilers and reviews until just now and it seems there was lots of hatred for the finale, but overall, I'm happy to see Robin end up with Ted.

So weird bump but I finally checked out the finale. Didn't care for it, a bit of a cop out if you ask me.

I'm just impressed that you made it 3 years without finding out the ending
I'm 90% sure I was told the ending, the fact that I didn't remember or care speaks to how underwelming it was.
I'm sure it's been brought up but when did future Ted become Ted and not Bob Sagot?

God damn I can't get over how much better that ending is

i like the alternate ending better for sure. i re-watched the whole series about a year ago. the last few seasons were really not very good. when i re-watched the office i was like "oh. these last few seasons are better than i remembered." not so much with HIMYM. i don't think it was as bad as people made it out, but it definitely wasn't good overall.
eta: glad to see i was on the first page talking about the mother dying

Holy shite the alternate ending was so much better.

Finally put the kid to bed and watched this, it's so much better. How did they not see this?
ETA thanks for sharing

Om a sidenote, I watched the last two episodes on a note of curiosity the other night and Mrs P casually watched as well. As shitty as they were, they drew her into the show so now she's watching from the start (she never watched initially cause she's a dumb whore). So yeah, that's kinda cool I guess.
