Not in 1900.

That's the usual Euro-centric view .Many cultures wore less clothes than that pre 1900 with breast & buttocks exposed(Polynesia,South America, Africa, New Guinea,etc...) Some still do today.

Only the 'Superior' Europeans felt the 'natives' were doing something 'morally' wrong & made them cover up once they colonized the area(if they could)

Some Europeans defended people in sub-tropical climate dressing as they please DESPITE being' men of their times'.

Just because a little skin is not the cultural norm(especially sexually repressed Europe) doesn't make nudity immoral nor those who enforce their norms on others right.

This is why it's an individual thing. I'm sure most people in the 1800s would think a bikini would be immoral. I think they'd be insane. There is nothing that says I'm right or they are right.

don't think so. Even when slavery was common throughout the world, the were always people who deplored the practice. However, not all forms of enslavement are equal. If two groups of people go to war with the understanding that the losers will become the slaves of the winners, is different that slavery solely based on race, religion or ethnicity.

Plus dehumanizing Chattel slavery was unheard of In Africa & was probably more akin to European Indentured servitude(not that I'm defending it) .

Unlike America in Africa you weren't owned as one owns a horse/cow/pig & passed down through the family nor bred & their children condemned to it.

Thanks for the info on Lombardi. I had never heard this before you mentioned it & read an interesting ESPN article in which it says he had a gay Brother.. He defended at least 3 'known'(assumed) Gay players & 2 executives & warned if anybody bothered them about their sexuality ..." they would be gone before their arse hits the road."

Daughter says he treated all players the same..."like dogs' Also supported a Black DE Lionel Aldridge) who married a White woman.

Vince Lombardi was a 'man of his time' just like Jefferson & Washington.

I don't know. I have never known a slave, nor has anyone on this board ever known one, unless you are well over 100 years old or come from some 3rd World country.

I would say that Lombardi was a man of all times, while Jefferson and Washington were men of their times.

The definition of what is moral/immoral behavior in 2013 is drastically different in some respects to what was moral/immoral behavior in 1790. That is is an unarguable fact.

I disagree. The cultural norms have changed, but morality is timeless.

Having ancestors that were enslaved makes one morally superior.

re: Does being a slave make one morally superior

There are still places in remote parts of the world where women walk around topless and no one thinks anything of it. In many of these places, the whole family sleeps in a one-room tent/hut, and it's common for the father and mother to have sex with their children in the room. Are these tribal folks less moral than folks from modern, industrialized societies?

That's definitely a better term.

I was just making a point of calling out those who claim Jefferson & Washington were just 'men of their times' (in quotation) as if they were actual victims of slavery than vice versa.

Their peers like Thomas Paine & John Adams definitely fit that description 'men of all times' . Paine (my favorite of the 'Founders') was more enlightened than many today.

'Man of his times' is an unacceptable excuse for people on the wrong side of history when there were countless examples of people who thought differently.

Then surely you're anti abortion now as the age of viability continues to decline and you'd want to be ahead of the curve.

If morality is timeless (universal), why don't you list the essential universal moral principles accepted for the last 3000 years of recorded history across all cultures?

Does it violate the NAP? Yes; immoral. No; not immoral.

Doesn't make them morally superior by definition, but it certainly gives them a strong starting position vs their slaver.

The problem with that is it negates perception of the age. IOW, was George Washington less moral than Richard Nixon?
but your problem here is playing moral relativism.

tf, that sentence could use a comma.

but again, and as Carrollton was pointing out, morals are far from timeless. Every day-and-age presumes correctness. Social evolution inevitably establishes otherwise. Future societies may well view things we take for granted, as wholly immoral. E.g., Future generations may assess current massive federal spending, duplicity, and media manipulation as an age of moral turpitude. They might view elective, irresponsible, out-of-wedlock childbirth in the same way. Who knows? Who cares? We are of our times.

being a slave makes you stupid and inferior.
Just the law of nature, nothing personal.
You don't like being a slave, you find a way not to be one, even if it means dying.
