I thought that the name, St George Parish, simply referred to the Catholic church parish that has been in that area for a long time?

Yep.

It started as a rural mission church but I don't know when it originated. At least as far back as the 1930's.

1908.

Not necessarily industrial, but several places that would have significant contributions to the property tax base:

What about L'Auberge?

If they/we can get 25% of registered voters (a/b 18K people) to sign a petition it will go on a ballot.

2- I'm pretty sure homestead exemption doesn't apply to cites and towns. So how comfortable can the organizers of this thing make people feel that they won't be hit with a property tax whammy from the new city?

What is your question? I've tried to explain this concept a few times above and provided a link to a Louisiana Assessor's office web site. If you still have a question, I'll try to answer it.

This. There has never been a St. George Parish, Louisiana, as far as I know. St. George was a rural settlement in the southern part of EBR Parish; when I was a kid this area was out in the sticks and was pretty much nothing but farms and fields.

Here's the map. Anyone know the reason for the small gerrymandered-looking portion that reaches just north of I-12?

It's the Eastside fire district.

I gotcha. So the proposed new city is a combination of current fire districts?

I like the idea as a whole. The area in gold would benefit greatly. I wonder what the impact would be on LSU though. They'd still be a part of BR, a greatly weakened BR at that.

True - L'Auberge would be included. I also forgot about the Country Club of Louisiana.

So would the kids, who go to Baton Rouge High, currently living in this area, still be allowed to go to BRHS? Or would they now have to go to another school?

So having grown up in Shenandoah, if this passes, would I be from Baton Rouge? St. George? The City Formerly Known as Baton Rouge?
