How is it Mumbo jumbo?? I see these people(black and white, before you pull a Sharpton) around the 1st and the 15th with shopping carts of more meat than i could ever afford.... And then they go get in their car that was parked in a handicapped spot . Yes they have a handicapped tag but they all look healthy to me.....

This has to be trolling

re: The Mismeasure of Poverty

The author ends the piece with this:

"Lowering poverty means both recognizing the successes of safety net programs we now have and devising new policies that can spread the gains generated by economic growth. If we don’t, then we will continue to face poverty rates that are unacceptably high, and wonder why we can’t do anything about them. "

I suspect we are already doing something "about them." The author's assertion seems to suggest that the gains must be more even spread than they are now, but woudldn't we first need to know whether it's the same people who are poor over time or if, relatively speaking, most poor people move up the ladder and out of poverty? If the latter is true, economic gains are already being spread evenly enough for the poor to benefit. It can get confusing when you talk about "the poor" because unlike "blacks" or "males," the group characteristic is not immutable. perhaps we could do even better, but I suspect that even now, most of the poor (at least the working poor) end up working their way up the ladder far enough to rise above the povery line. (Sorry - I got not stats or links! )

Poverty is when you don't have an EBT Card and a couple of Baby Mommas to feed off of.

Can you show me some stats on rate of welfare abuse? You guys talk about this all the time, but I'd wager it's not nearly as common as y'all seem to think.

Regardless, we'll never come up with some kind of welfare system that is 100% abuse free. It's the (small) price you pay to help the majority stay on their feet.

It's somewhere in between 1 and 5 percent.

re: The Mismeasure of Poverty

Most welfare abuse is subtle, not someone selling their food stamps for cash even thought it still happens . Through my job i go to alot of grocery retailers and see all kind of stuff. I see the couple with the guy in the Halliburton jumpsuit but they didnt get married so she collects from the state. I see the baskets full of meat loaded into an escalade parked in the handicap spots on the 1st and the 15th.. I see the gas station that charges 60$ on a LA purchase card for $30 worth of gas...... And don't tell me to call it in and report it because its been done and nothing happens

Do you define using SNAP to purchase Lobster, Designer Cookies, NY Strips, and Häagen-Dazs as abuse?

I hear you, but I'd categorize theft of taxpayer money as abuse.

I'd say that anyone capable of working, but getting welfare is abusing the taxpayer. Clearly that's a lot higher than 1-5%...
