Constitution of the Panhellenic Association of the University of Alabama

a) "A woman is eligible to participate in recruitment and join a sorority if she is enrolled at The University of Alabama as a full-time student."

f) "The National Panhellenic Conference fraternities do not discriminate in membership selection practices on any basis prohibited by law."

And that's why this is bs. Good for the ladies who spoke out and resigned rather than be associated with this behavior. If the girl had the votes to join, it was obviously an issue at a higher level and they should be held accountable.

To BHP's point, it WAS organic integration that was subverted by alumni & others who should have just shut up & let the votes carry.

The most concerning part of the whole story IMO. An employee of the university denied the applicant solely because she was black.

BHP,

I appreciate what you are saying. However, this is a public university, using state and federal funds, using public facilities. They are violating their own rules by not integrating much less state and federal law. If they want an exclusive club based off discriminatory practices, make it private.

I'm writing about today, I didn't say all HBCU's, and I would not presume to write about your relatives, I don't know a thing about them or you. You could be a CITWTT alter for all I know.

I will say that there's no longer a need for some public HBCU's in places where there is another public institution in close proximity. In the town I grew up in, after schools were forced to integrate, the separate Black and White schools merged into one. In cases where it's practicable, I think this policy should be extended to higher education. Unfortunately, politics will probably prevent this from happening in my lifetime. Having said all this, I do believe that public HBCU's that aren't in close proximity to other public institutions, have as much right to continue exist as separate entities as other smaller, non-flagship public institutions (eg. Nichols State, McNeese State, etc.).

The actives wanted these girls. They were prevented by alumnae and a university official.

And it's not as simple as being "private organizations." Greek chapters are university-affiliated and must abide by university regulations. A normal university would be on these chapters with a quickness over this. Clearly, Alabama is not a normal university. But I expect the Nationals to come down with the hammer of god on these alumnae.

What can they really do to them? Tell them they can't come to alumni day in the fall?

They can remove the racist alums from their positions as chapter advisers and whatnot, and put some women in their place who are ready to live in the 21st century. I expect them to do so. The Nationals really don't like bad publicity like this-Greeks get enough of it as there is. And this is simply not an issue in most of the country. The UA chapters will have to get with the program.

And for the record, I'm a Greek alum. It's long past time for shite like this to end.

a - it's racism (not the faux kind)

b- private organization, they have freedom of association

c- they deserve no shelter from scathing criticism pointing out their racism.

If the sorority really wanted the girl, they should have taken their cue from the 1963 Mississippi State basketball team, who qualified for the NCAA basketball tournament. They were forbidden from participating in the tournament by the "adults" who ran the state government because they would be playing against teams with Black players. However, the team was determined to play, so the snuck out of Starkville under the cover of darkness and played in the tournament anyway. They in effect said, "frick you Ross Barnett and the rest of you old fools at the state capital."

By the way what's the LSU track record in this regard. When i was there in the seventies i was told since you are Jewish you can only join the Jewish frat. and then the Jewish frat nobody from north of Memphis.

These may be private organizations but they are there at the discretion of the University. Let black athletes stop coming to bama and we will see how things change.

Well there's a difference. They football team wants the black athletes. The sorority doesn't want the black girl.

Exactly. If the black athletes see Bama as a racist place, and think twice about going there, now that will hit home.

Ever hard of institutional racism? If you don't recognize it in this case when a group of people in "authority" act with one mind to make sure that a person is kept down on the farm "where she belongs" you're dense. Three sororities, three administrators(advisors) all coming together and acting in concert is more than a bit of a fluff piece. The newspaper would do well to publish their pictures next Friday before Bamas home game to give them a fitting dose of shame and DISCRIMINATION from everyone that sees them.

CITTWITT is 100% on target.

Face it and admit it, the University allowed this racism to go on and it was supported by their parents who wanted their Magnolia Dixie chicken daughter to meet the future law school members only.

The whole system is elitist to keep their daughters from the riff raff.

The only concerning part of the story is that a university employee was allegedly involved. Other than that, this is a private organization that can choose to associate with who ever they please. If they choose they don't like black people, who gives a shit? I wouldn't want to join a club that didn't like white people.

You're not gonna take it to the highest court in the land and demand to be let in because you were being disrespected?

There are still Jewish frats (one or two, not sure nowadays,) but there are Jewish kids in non-Jewish greek organizations, too. We had a Jewish guy in my chapter years ago, which (I'm guessing) was not too terribly long after you were there. No blacks in any chapters then, which was wrong and I regret it. I wish I had spoken up and tried to change things. Live and learn.

Currently, LSU is not the most enlightened campus in the country, but just walking around on gameday, I see Asian and Indian kids in Greek organizations pretty often. And unless I'm really, really off in identifying ethnicities, I've seen one or two African Americans.
