I mentioned my friend's band by name because they are playing the festival in question. It's not like I claimed to know The fricking Cure.

Doesn't name dropping add some sort of credibility, as far as discussions go? It's not like you're using the name drop to get anything in return.

I'll concede that it did offer some credibility in the Arcade Fire example, as we were talking about their character and SHE had some personal experience. But what credibility is required to tell us that okkervil river is actually playing at this festival? Either way, if you name drop you can usually expect that people will make fun of you, or at least that's what Keith Richards used to tell me.

I like how women and men are incapable of just being friends and drinking buddies. I couldn't POSSIBLY have anything in common with these guys and genuinely get along with them. No way a member of the band could be a former co-worker of mine or anything. I MUST be spreading my legs because what other reason could they possibly have for wanting to hang out with me?

This is awesome, an ACL thread turned into an all out Music Board brawl. Well just for the record, the only reason L Boogie stands up for those guys is cause she got an Arcade train run on her after a show. And I banged theDoc's mother, and still do regularly.
