The NFL made $9billion last year. They were able to settle for less than 10% of that to resolve players getting their brains squashed. Seems like a deal to me.

On the other side of the coin, how many of these plantiffs really are really suffering and how many are just looking for a handout?

What about when the next wave of lawsuits come?

one thing about class action settlements is that they can protect you from this and give pretty good absolution

$765M is a great deal for the NFL, even though i think these suits are bullshite

Any legal experts know what the chances are that the judge would throw out a settlement like this?

low

if it wasn't accepted it would be for a procedural issue and not the amount of settlement

According to the settlement, $675 million of the $765 million would be used to compensate former players and families of deceased players who have suffered cognitive injury. Other money will be used for baseline medical exams, the cost of which will be capped at $75 million. The NFL will also fund research and education at a cost of $10 million.

Individual awards would be capped at $5 million for men with Alzheimer's disease; $4 million for those diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) after their deaths; and $3 million for players with dementia.

The settlement will include all players, their authorized representatives or family members if a player is deceased, who have retired as of the date on which the court gives preliminary approval of the settlement.

The NFL has 20 years to pay the full amount of the settlement, but half of the total must be paid within the first three years and the rest over the next 17 years.

Legal fees are not included in this agreement. A district court will decide what compensation the plaintiffs can receive for those costs.

Yep. There was some talk about the suits potentially bankrupting the nfl back when they were first filed.

When was the last time that a doom and gloom prediction came true?

I'm sure that was part of some league office propaganda to try to scare people to garner public opinion. Fans would be pissed at the plaintiffs if they shut the league down over this.

Some are suffering, more are looking for a handout, almost all would do it again if they had the chance.

The NFL needs to make players sign a release saying they understand the risks and wont act like bitches after they retire and blow all their money.

What does that breakdown to? About 3, 4 mil a player. shite, good for them. And excuse me for not being sorry for the overprofiting, spoiled arse owners and their watchdog Goodell. Some teams have made some owners super wealthy like Benson arse. The NFL is the players always has been. People want to see the players.

765 million between 4500 players is an average of 170 grand each.

Stay in school

ETA the way Roto put it, that money isnt going to be just split up like that. Its going to be a fund to pay for players medical needs and concussion research

And most importantly none of the "nfl lied to us" can be further discussed. Big that the nfl got out of that going on display.

Plus it's a 20 year payout. It amount to each team essentially giving an extra league min contract for 20 years.

Sounds like this could be a landmark case for those anti-class action pamphlets

Got a big number, doesnt mean it will make much of a difference for the players.

$765 million is a solid deal for the NFL. If they let even one case be left up to a Judge, the NFL would be fricked.
