His strength is definitely rushing, but his run defense improved significantly each season.

Last season, he was ranked 7th in terms of run defense.

Dude better get healthy.

It's a name I and others have brought up for a few days now.

This is great. Good, solid player.

Rumor is we gave up Preston Parker to get him. If true and if that was all we gave up, we just committed armed robbery.

It's already been said it was a pick. That would clear up the Tanner vs Parker sebate

Folks are always calling for Loomis to "make it happen". Kudos for a good deal. Not good blood between the franchises so all the more so too.

Many may not know him but he's decent. Under the circumstances he may be great stopgap answer.

rotoworld sums it up-
The Saints are the most desperate team in football when it comes to pass rushers, and this move just confirms it. The 49ers were going to cut Haralson. 29 years old, Haralson didn't play a down last season due to a triceps tear, and hasn't registered more than five sacks in any campaign since 2008. He's a long shot to help New Orleans. Meanwhile, the 49ers are loaded with pass rushers. They have Cam Johnson and rookie Corey Lemonier coming off highly impressive preseasons behind Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks.

He was going to cost a decent dime for being a backup on a loaded roster and an inevitable cut. A late round pick is appropriate compensation.

It's a great deal for both teams. SF gets better than nothing, and NO gets a 3-4 veteran at an extremely weak position. Words can't convey what an upgrade Haralson is over that tub of lard the Saints had playing OLB. His leadership within the 3-4 may actually be more important. He won't be Rickey Jackson but he will be solid. At this stage in the game that's as great a move as Loomis could have made.

How is he a long shot to help us? I've got news for rotoworld: if the guy can play, he can help.

Probably not, but that's a good start.

My bad. I was reading the thread on SR and it was mixed in with the jumbo thread there, but I have not seen it reported anywhere else. Should have added that to my original post.

No sweat, just trying to get the facts. Hopefully it's conditional, 6 at the highest. Hoping desperation didn't get the best of us.

What am I saying? Never question the Loomis.

Was skimming thru that 49ers message board Haralson thread, and they were speculating we traded a WR for Haralson, and joked how pissed we Saints fans would be if turned out to be Lance Moore.

Rotoworld got that from yahoo. It's a load of crap. He's a good player.

49ers fans absolutely love him.

Scott Fujita. Yeah, it's been that long.

Although the 49ers have some great young talent at outside linebacker, it is still disappointing to see Haralson leave. He was always a solid guy on the roster. He sat out last year with a torn triceps muscle, but before that, he was a key part of Aldon Smith's transition to outside linebacker. Haralson played in the base defense, and Aldon came on in pass rush situations. This was able to happen in part because Haralson was solid against the run, and able to give the 49ers just enough in platooning with Aldon.

Prior to that, Haralson even managed some solid pass rush numbers when the 49ers were struggling to figure out a defensive identity. He was never a dominant pass rusher, but he was solid.

I could see Haralson in our base defense with Galette coming in to rush the passer. Solid rotation IMO.

You've seen him more than anyone here probably. What caliber player is this guy? Who would you compare him to?

Haralson started all 16 games in 2011. He was the guy who roughed everyone up on 1st and 2nd down before Aldon came in on 3rd and loaded up on sacks as a rookie. He's a pretty good player and would be a starter on most teams (which means he should be starting for NO). He got a bad hand when the Niners finally got that magical pass rusher and between Aldon (1st team All-Pro) and Ahmad Brooks (2nd team All-Pro), Haralson had to be the long-term odd man out. He obviously didn't get a chance to play last year and improve his worth.

He should technically be entering his prime now. If we didn't have a stable of young pass rushers behind him we wouldn't have shipped him. The reality is that he can probably still play at a high level, we just have no room and don't have the roster luxury of keeping everyone. He will be playing for a contract. I think he's good for anywhere from 5-8 sacks (hard for anyone playing with that defense to do any better). He's fairly balanced against the run and pass.

It's hard to be devastated to see him go between the aforementioned freaks starting and the recent freak draftees, but he'll be missed. I don't really know who to compare him to that you would appreciate.

Point is; He's better than what we had. OLB is the weakest part of the entire defense, and bringing him here helps it out some.
