Serena would get smoked by the top 200 males IMO.

You think the men can't handle her serve?

but I think the better question is her v. Johnny Mac right now, what happens?

this has already been discussed. 6-3 6-4 Mac was the consensus. she could not handle the sidespins, angles, etc. She has never faced a true vollyer like Mac. She may not even win the 7 games.

Cool as shite. I'll never forget that tourney. My mom went for like 10 straight years for the opening week. And I had to stay at my grandmother's.

She let me stay up for the night matches, and that was during Conner's run. I watched every match he played that year.

My mom was at the match that lasted till like 2am. I think it was the Patrick McEnroe match.

The pictures she had......

Edburg, Lendle, Conners.........Great stuff.

I was at the Todd Martin/Carlos Moya match that went five and lasted until after 1. The match where Martin took a victory lap afterwards. A lot of fun.

It was pretty much the anniversary of Martin/Rusedski where Martin also came back from two sets. He was either dealing with the flu or food poisoning and was getting absolutely stomped before coming back.

Todd Martin was my favorite player not named Pete Sampras for a long time. As much heart as anyone out there.

He did have heart.

The reason the US Open is my favorite is strictly the night matches. I have seen some of the most epic matches lasting till past midnight.

Like I said about Conners, I was 10 when his run happened, and it was all night matches. Great fricking stuff.

Serena's swinging volley is officially absurd

I was tearing folks up at the HS level with that shot before Serena had even won a slam. I LOVE that shot. Force your opponent into a defensive reply, then sneak up into no-man's land and take a full cut out of the air at whatever they offer up. They key with that shot is that you have to hit with an exaggerated amount of topspin or you'll dump it into the net.

But Serena has popularized it for the masses. And her penchant for hitting that shot is part of the reason I like her.

Key to me was catching it high in the air. You wait for it to come down and it will eat you up

Johnny Mac would win, and here is why I think so.

There can simply be no arguing that Serena Williams could beat either Andre Agassi or Pete Sampras right now. I can't imagine any reasonable person disagreeing with that when Agassi was playing at a very high level on the tour until 2006. And Sampras was playing a series of (I think) 3 exhibition matches against Roger Federer in 2008, and he won one of them and was competitive in all of them.

The powershares series features guys like Michael Chang, Agassi, Sampras, Courier, Mac, Todd Martin, Pat Rafter, and others. Despite Mac being a dozen or more years older than these guys, he is one of the best players on this "tour". He beat Michael Chang (three times), Todd Martin, Pete Sampras, Jim Courier (twice), Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl (twice), and Mats Wilander. He lost some too. I don't mean to mislead. Here are some of the records:

Mcenroe: 11-9
Courier; 7-8.
Agassi: 6-2
Sampras: 5-2
Chang: 2-6 (ouch!)
Rafter: 3-0

So, here is what we know:
1. Agassi or Sampras would destroy Serena
2. Mac is competitive with both Agassi and Sampras
3. Mac plays MAD tennis and clearly keeps himself in shape, so fitness would not be an issue.

I think that, in view of the above, it is reasonable to conclude that Mac can beat the top female player in the game, even at 54.

The lower they drop, the higher the degree of difficulty, but it can still be done. You just rip it with low to high with authority a la Rafa Nadal.

She could easily beat a dude on the tour. Her serve is strong enough to compete, IMO

No no no no.

Anybody in the top 500 would work her over.

oh, she'd torch Johnny. that wouldn't even be a contest. i really think she could play competitively against someone like James Blake right now. i think she could beat someone ranked in the 200s.

I'm not sure how to put this nicely. What you wrote is completely absurd. James Blake would probably beat her 1 and 0. And anyone in the top 200 would beat her with ease.

And Johnny Mac would beat her.

Here is an article on the subject. Jeff Tarango says Serena would have to drop below the top 350 before she could be competitive

And I think Tarango is being generous. I can't imagine Serena beating a male player in the top 500.
