From my limited experience, if it took 13 hours it was on gear that it would take 13 hours on. If it was on gear that would take 13 hours on, not many guys have stamina AND A BACK, that can do that. I'd be fricked up after that.
Unless this is some odd tourney where you can pass off to other fishers.

Like I said, some fish have more fight in them than others. Fish could have sounded in 2000' of water and had to plane it up for hours.
Could have been on 50 lb line and not able to put a lot of drag on it.
Won't know til we hear directly from the crew.
I fought a yellowfin in Costa Rica for 9 hrs one day on a 50 shimano; 327 lbs and had to rebuild the damn reel. Ate good though.
Then again, I caught a 676 lb blue out of venice in 45 minutes on a 130 flat seas and backed down hard-- fish stayed up close and never sounded.
Its all fishing. Congrats Whoo Dat and to the Tarpon Rodeo-2nd oldest fishing tournament in the good old USA.

I'd be too. That's what I'm saying. 13 hours on one man, I'd be laid up for a week.
Whoever hooks the fish is supposed to land it in this tourney, if they did it by the book.

I'm ignorant when it comes to billfishing, but why in the hell would you use line that light when fishing for such a big species?

Yeah it comes down to the captain. A lot of the real charter or tourney trip stories I've ever heard involving large fish like this involve the fish dying and some poor sap trying to lug him up by himself as dead weight.

I can promise you they had no less than 50s on the boat and more than likely 80s. That is a legit fish by a legit team, no fly by nighters I can assure you. Whether it died in the fight or not is irrelevant, it was a fish that should be brought in, particularly in a tournament. Nothing bad about that and certainly something to be proud of.
If anyone says they wouldn't do the same is full of shite. Those boys were pumped and rightly so.

I was saying dying is normal and makes the accomplishment even more impressive.

A lot depends on the fish. Some fish you simply can't tag and release. The odds of the fish surviving just don't warrant it.

There are multiple video requirements, like a daily designator shown in the video, video your fish to identify the species, video the actual release along side boat, and the immediately video date and time stamp on boats GPS. Different point levels for different billfish species depending on tournament format.
