I know I'll be the only one or close to it, but I give the player zero responsibility here and the agent 100%. IMO it is absurd to think a player should know all of the details of his contract. These contracts are like novels with a million different provisions. This is basically the exact reason he pays the agent, for the agent to know these types of things.

agreed. 100% agents fault imo.

A girl I went to HS with married an NFL player-nobody famous, just a journeyman lineman, but he stuck around quite a while. He lost a ton of money due to bad investments with a con artist and had to keep playing a lot longer than he wanted to.

Agent should have been fired for having 2 million contingent on participating in the workouts in the first place, even if the dude would have remembered to attend.

Pretty self explanatory.

Most teams set the attendance mark at something like 80 or 90 percent of the workouts. With the reduced number of OTAs to begin with, if you miss a small amount, there goes your bonus.

That's what roster bonuses are for.

Technically, it wasn’t a workout bonus. Brown’s salary hinged on participation in the offseason workouts. By failing to show, his base pay drops from $2.925 million to $925,000.

DAMN.

Solution to this problem?

Go to your fricking OTA's.

But it is the agent's responsibility to ensure that the player knows his responsibilities.

Did you read every page of your mortgage loan agreement? Cause I know I sure as frick didn't. Paid my attorney to advise me accordingly.

Actually, it's exactly his responsibility. Why do you think he gets paid 3% or whatever it is? That is his job.

I love how this is the agent's fault. I can assure you that at some point the player knew it was part of the deal. But regardless of anything else, he's a PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYER - that means you show up for pratice and training sessions. The player was lazy and not committed to being at the top of his game, dumb move.

How exactly can you assure me of that? He says he didn't know, i'm wondering how you can assure everyone that he did. You really think players know all of the details of their contracts?

What part of voluntary practice is everyone misunderstanding?

What, you don't believe he knowingly agreed to base two-thirds of his pay this year on being present for workouts that he never had any intention of attending?

These contracts are like 10 pages long. Not exactly Moby Dick.

They really aren't as complicated as some of you seem to think.

It's hard to know without having knowledge of the incident and what the agent has told this guy. While it's probably most the agent's fault, the player should have some personal responsibility to know what the frick is in his contract. I mean come on. Still agent deserved to be fired more than likely.

Because the agent has to tell the client what the agreement is so the client can accept it. The agent doesn't accept on behalf of the client. At some point he was told what the deal was. Now maybe he forgot or didn't understand, but at some point he had to have known.

Who is the Golfer poster that everyone says has insider info and thinks is David Toms?

I'm starting to think you're the new version of him. you know wayyyyyyy too much about all of the insides of sports to just be a casual fan.

Why did he have to know?

you think players know every detail of a contract? Zero chance, that I can assure you of, though I'm not sure how I can do that lol.

This is completely the agents fault.

ETA: Only a shitty agent wouldn't know their client was missing workouts.

The agent made almost $90k off this guy. More than most families make in a year. It is most definitely his responsibilty to inform and make ABSOLUTELY SURE his client understands $2M is dependant on making the set number of OTAs.

I wonder if the agent cant be sued for fiduciary breach of contract with the player.
