Probably nothing compared to some of the post-Zippy's blowouts I've had.

Yeah, if this is a Cameron bop they could try and shut down a lot out there until they are inspected.

Why did they go straight to the blind rams? Should have closed the pipe rams and or annular first. Once you go for the shear you are screwed if they don't make the cut.

I don't know that they didn't try that. That's why I don't want to start spreading rumors.

The only concrete thing we know is that they took a kick, evacuated, and it ignited last night

Yea I doubt they went straight to the Blind Shear rams first. Unless someone working at Walter comments we have pretty limited info right now.

Why? Cameron was cleared of any fault for the first blowout.

Per Bloomberg in April

quote:

Cameron, which made the so-called blowout preventer designed to stop explosions in BP’s oil well, was named in multiple lawsuits claiming the equipment was defective. Witnesses testifying at a New Orleans trial over fault for the disaster have said the blowout preventer wasn’t properly maintained by the Transocean (RIG) Ltd. crew manning the drill rig.

quote:

Cameron was sued because its equipment didn’t stop the blowout. Barbier found the evidence presented at trial didn’t establish the company improperly designed or manufactured the safety system. Witnesses testified the Deepwater Horizon’s blowout preventer suffered from faulty wiring and a dead battery. “The evidence is directed not at Cameron itself but rather at Cameron’s customers,” BP and Transocean, Barbier said in court yesterday. BP and Transocean are “sophisticated customers,” Barbier said. “They specified and selected the type of blowout preventer, the components, the arrangement of the components and made decisions, whether those decisions in the end were right or wrong or proper or not, they made decisions as to how this blowout preventer would be configured and arranged and its capacity,” he said.

Hope they didn't skip putting a set of rams in for the tubing in the hole because they didn't want to do a BOP test.

When you take a kick you go annular, pipe, pipe blind in that order. Seems unlikely all the failed.

A theory could be that they closed to annular or VBR first which trapped wellbore pressure in the BOP stack. Then, they operated the blind shear ram which had to overcome the trapped wellbore pressure and the force needed to shear the pipe.

No idea what happened in between those steps.

Not only that but once you shear you can no longer circulate your kick out. The only option left is to bullhead and that is not a good option.

but its better than this current option of having a blowout

they were able to bullhead and set a plug on SS 225 a few weeks ago

Not likely. It's more likely someone panicked. I've been on the choke in that same scenario. You aren't going to be opening the backside when the choke line is charged up.

Potential to be like BP???

Considering BP was a huge leak at the bottom of the gulf and this is a gas well on fire, this is a nothing.

Yea I'm just speculating on what happens after they couldn't control the well with the annular or VBR closed if they closed them at all.

I think the likely scenario is they didn't know or ignored the signs that they were getting a kick, gas hits the rig floor, they freak out, close the Blind Shear rams and get the hell out of dodge before everything blows up.

The only environmental impact that is possible is if the rig would sink and rupture a pipeline in the area.

The chances of this happening are small and impact would be minimal.
