Honestly I love the south. I wouldn't mind vacationing in Portland but I wouldn't want to move from the southeast US. The southeast US is growing for a reason. The quality of life is good here inexpensive, family oriented, good climate, good for sportsman, etc. I would use the pods to move.

I have no advice on the moving situation but congrats on the job. Went to Portland earlier this summer and loved it. Awesome city

Also, PLAN TO VACATION in the winter. If you are coming from Florida, the rain and grey will probably get to you and your kids.

I have several friends that live on the west coast and they seem to go to Hawaii a lot for vacations.

I've done a couple, not as far.

DC to Denver and BR to SF

Both via uhaul, towing the car behind

It's been awhile but I think it was round 1200-1500 total.

Got 5k to move both times, made out like a bandit. I loved it, was a great adventure. But probably not for everyone

Thought about it, but nah... That would be a nightmare with 14 year-old triplets...

A nice drive east, across the Cascades, is all that is needed to get some sunshine and blue skies if the overcast gets you down.

I would love to move the fam to Portland, but I really doubt I would enjoy the weather there.

Summers are nice in Portland. It has about as many clear, sunny days in a year as Chicago, Albany, etc.

True. Bend gets over 300 days of sun a year.

Yeah. Obviously, I'm not talking about summer when I say that weather is a concern. The Seattle winter and even some of the spring was miserable for me. When the weather is good though, it is amazing for all kinds of outdoorsy activities.

If the OP and his family doesn't mind the climate, then it'll probably be a great move for them and their future.

It's amazing regardless of the weather IMO.

Our climate is much more severe than Seattle but it really doesn't stop people from doing outdoor stuff. But you do have a point. You either thrive in it (or despite it) or you learn to hate it.

Weeks of cloudy weather (or longer in our case) can take a toll, but it does make you appreciate those sunny days all the more. It is that slow, misty rain that gives the country the lush green look though.

This is Northwest Arkansas and why it's booming. With all that, there is still opportunity to make big city $$$.

I move to St Pete this time next year.

I'm packing my clothes into my car and some other smaller to mid size belongings and selling my TV, bed, and other items.

Will buy new stuff when I get there.
