I don't understand this. It's not like I'm going to OD on my lenses or start selling them to kids so they can get all visual.

One very obvious reason is they don't want people making their vision worse then getting on the road and causing accidents.

I used lens.com one time with an expired prescription. They didn't notice

It's also a way to force people to have the health of their eyes checked. Although a lot of people only go cause they need more contacts, the doc also checks the health of eyes which could possibly detect a problem, health-wise before it becomes a bigger issue.

If you require a prescription for contacts, then why not for readers?

You have to have an Rx to order contacts. They do expire.

Y'all realize how cheap vision insurance is??

I think I paid out of pocket $30 for mine, insurance covered the rest of the exam plus paid for either half off contacts or half the cost of new glasses.

economic protectionism is often disguised as safety measures. governments routinely use the safety excuse to restrict liberty.

1800contacts has never disapproved my order and my prescription was out of date 4 years ago when I ordered there the first time.

I tried to order a pair of glasses online but my eye doctor wouldn't approve it without an up to date prescription.

Readers aren't stuck on the cornea for days or weeks. Also, readers are useful to anyone (e.g. hobbyists) who needs a set of magnifying glasses, and presbyopia is a normal part of aging.

I've been ordering from Zenni and Eyebuydirect for years, and they don't require any sort of paperwork. You just enter the Rx values online, and they fill it. That said, if there is a problem with the order, they may ask for it, but I just told them I threw it away after placing my order.

Definitely don't need old people getting their eyes checked.

doc lobbyists push state legislatures to pass laws requiring eye exams.

He's right. I think a scrip's good for a year in La. It's a state by state deal I'm pretty sure, and in Louisiana, the medical lobby is strong.

In other states, I've heard that a nurse anesthetist (sp) can put you under with no MD anesthesiologist (sp) supervising them. Supposedly, Louisiana was about go allow that, but Mike Foster's best friend was an anesthesiologist and put the nix on it.

Optometrists would love it. At least yearly eye exams for everyone starting around 40 and going on for 20 years, concerning a condition that AFAIK, is not predictive of any pathology. There are good reasons to have wellness checkups, but your arms getting shorter isn't one of them. (Unless they really are physically shrinking - I'd get that checked out.)

re: Buying contact lenses without a prescription?

I found a company in Canada thru the interwebs who didn't require a prescription.

Fyi most insurance plans cover a yearly ophthalmologist exam which is just ur Dr visit co pay. They can write u a contact lense prescription plus they can actually check to make sure ur eyes are healthy.

So you will not pay that every couple of years? Isn't your eyesight worth at least that amount?

Also.....this will always make me get eye exams on a regular basis. Last month cared for a child that broke her glasses so her mom had to take her for another eye exam. Eye doctor saw something weird on the exam, sent her to another doctor.....she has a BRAIN TUMOR!! No other symptoms.....only reason they discovered it so soon was cause she broke her glasses and got an eye exam.
She has a brain, too. If you missed the thread title, he's also an Auburn fan.
