With one more particular commit, will we become "Cam U" as well as DL, DB, etc?

I'm black and mentioning that Cameron's a black kicker doesn't annoy me at all....it's rare...I am a little excited about this actually...as long as he is good. On the other hand, TQ gets a ton of race debates on here because people look at his skin and believe he does not possess the talent at the WR position...but I am here to tell you that TQ is a beast and I can't wait to have him in this class! frick Race!

Couldn't find the last stat I was looking for, but this is most of it and shows the critical importance of a FG kicker at LSU at least until the offense upgrades.

LSU scored in 2012 on 85% of their red zones chances which was good enough for 36th in the nation and 5th (Georgia was like 34th) in the SEC. That is pretty good considering after all, LSU isn't in the red zone playing New Mexico State. LSU scored 51% of the time on TDs which is NOT very good and the stat I couldn't find now but found at one time I believe was that was like 80th in the nation. Of course what brought it up to 85% was the addition of 34% of the time scoring on FGs. I believe the standard to shoot for is 60 to 65% on TDs so as I said 51% is awfully low.

My point is that FG kicker is incredibly important at LSU as opposed to say an Oregon where they probably don't even consider trying many FGs.

Just be patient--LSU is in a great position to wind up signing both CG's.

And this one could prove to be just as significant. A good place kicker as we all know can win some games for a team and is often crucial in winning a national championship.

Alleman was a walk-on. Hard to say a walk-on is a bust.

Moreover, his career stats are 37/47 (79%) on FG and 106/107 on XP.

He was fine.

Oh I agree totally. If CLM is willing to offer a Kicker. Then that Kicker is legit. I was just stating what ran through my mind when I saw "Welcome CG.."

I didn't say he was a bust. As far as his FG % goes, I haven't looked it up, but as I stated with the redzone stats, LSU tries a TON of short to medium length FGs which of course does tend to drive up your success rate. I don't remember Alleman being very good on long FGs. Also, as I stated, he was kicking so short on kiokoffs that they went to Hairston the latter half of 2011 I believe to remedy that.

BTW, he STARTED as a walk on but I believe he was on scholarship the last 2 years right? I'll stick with my "disappointment" opinion...I wouldn't put him the Jaspar, Browndyke, etc class of LSU kickers at all. That does not make him a bust BTW.

I hear ya. I would not consider him a disappointment. He was an okay kicker. He did earn a scholarship his last two years which is not uncommon, especially if he is playing a lot. Of course he does not belong in the class of Jasper and Browndyke, the two greatest kickers in the history of LSU, but then not many do.

No he is not the first black kicker at LSU. James Wagner in the 80's from St. Aug kicked for LSU

Not the first black kicker at LSU, and other SEC schools have had black kickers as well (South Carolina had a black place kicker who played briefly for the Cardinals in 2001). I normally frown on mention of race, because it normally isn't relevant, but black place kickers and punters are so rare that it is something worth mentioning, just because of the oddity of it.

Alleman was clutch in 2011.

quote:

JUNIOR SEASON (2011)Ranked first in the SEC and second nationally in field goal percentage at .889 (16-of-18) ... Ranked fourth in the SEC in scoring with 110 points, the fourth-largest total in LSU single season history ... Connected on 62-of-63 point-after attempts with only miss coming following a bobbled snap on his first attempt of the year against Oregon ... Earned honorable mention All-America recognition by Sports Illustrated as well as second-team All-SEC honors by the Associated Press and the SEC Coaches ... Earned Lou Groza Star of the Week recognition after he nailed all three of his field goal attempts, including the game-winning 25-yarder in overtime, at Alabama ... Named one of three Lou Groza Stars of the Week nationally after an outstanding game against Mississippi State as he finished a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals (21, 42, 41, 29) and was 1-for-1 on extra points ... The four field goals at Mississippi State ranked as the second-most field goals in a game in school history

Alleman Bio

2012 might have been disappoiting by 2011 standards, but we might not have won the SEC without him in 2011.He gave all he had for LSU.

Good post and I think you just defined my "disappointment. He DID have a great 2011 except for being dislodged at the kickoff guy, but FGs, yeah! But the problem is he didn't follow it up with as good of a 2012. Couple the 2012 with the short kickoffs in 2011 which were really, really bad in fact, and that is what I'm talking about.

I believe I heard he had some sort of injury in 2011 that explained his kickoff distance but I remember game after game where everybody team I was watching on TV was kicking down to the 5 and to the goal line, etc. LSU until they switched to Hairston was kicking down to the 10...the 12...the 14 and it wasn't a strategic move to kick the ball short. That stuck in my mind along with 2012 being inconsistent some.

"Converted 21-of-29 field goals" {in 2012) and "Kicked career-long field goal of 49 yards in win over Arkansas"

I didn't expect a 16 out of 18 again but 21 of 29 is a far cry from that. Also, I never realized he never kicked a 50 yard FG at LSU.

well I'm sure the efficiency of the offense in 2011 combined with the proficiency of the 2011 defense made it alot easier to kick in 2011 compared to 2012.

and not to hijack the thread talking about DA, but congrats to CG!
