As of now I have very few expenses. I put about 50% into savings, which very shortly will be put towards investments.

Live within my means. I also have a wife who works, so that helps a lot.

Much more the latter. But as I said, I have very few expenses.

I'm single (as in not married), have no kids, car is payed off, no credit card or student loan debt, or any other debt, and I don't spend money on material possessions.

It's pretty easy to live off of a relatively small income when you don't throw money away.

I have to keep a bunch of money liquid in a money market fund for funding rental real estate deals and for secondary tax liens/foreclosing and flipping properties.

When I say "savings" I mean retirement accounts.

Also, how long did y'all save up for your emergency accounts? Should I hold off retirement accounts for that.

Situation- 24, wife 29, 1 baby on the way.

We'll gross 85 next year. 12k in my Roth, 1k in her ira. 7k in checking (I personally want to keep it north of 5k)

I was probably in my early 30's, with 2 kids when I started putting half my paycheck away. I'm 40 now. As far as emergency fund, I don't really think about having a certain amt. I try to make sure I have enough in savings to make sure that if I make a big purchase(car), that I still have enough to cover a couple months of bills. My current vehicle is 7 yrs old and I will drive it till the wheels fall off.

Oh I do, just because I'm responsible with my money doesn't mean I don't have fun. Most of my expendable money goes towards going out, eating out, and traveling.

Currently, about %20. Just made a large purchase and am getting it back up to the 4 month cushion level which should take 4/5 months.

This means I won't be able to max out our Roths until early next year when the bonus checks come in.

Prius.

Seriously, though, I currently work 50 miles from my house. I bought it (used) two years ago and it is still worth my purchase price. And the car note + gas is still lower than what I was paying for gas in my last vehicle.

Pre or post tax? makes a big difference and are you also including paycheck deductions like 401k, health insurance, disability ect.?

~30% after all deductions tax, ins. ect.
~15% pre tax
