re: Nick Longhi

That's pretty damn disappointing to hear. I would have thought it would have been most double that.

Damn that's it? That's almost as shitty as that kid from zachary saying he would only go for a million and taking 300k

von rosenberg got $1,200,000 not bad for 6th round people still haven't got over that.

Then it was Colvin or Cecchinni that took way less money than he said he was. Someone took like when he was looking for nothing less than a million

Colvin signed for about 700k on the last day if I remember correctly which was shocking at the time given that he was looking for 1 million+

Mainieri wasn't a happy camper and rightfully so.

Edit: Cecchini also took way less than what he was looking for.

Colvin got $900,000, damn good money. What got everyone all upset was he was on campus for freshman orientation so assumptions were made that he was coming to school. Great negotiating tactic by Colvin.
Cecchini initially asked for 1.75 mil and got 1.3, so I guess he got way less than what he was asking for but can you blame the guy?

After taxes Longhi will have approx. $300K, that's not exactly a life altering amount of money.

I agree with what someone else said, this shows this kid was never serious about school, he only signed with LSU in an attempt to drive up the signing bonus. The Red Sox called his bluff and got him on the cheap.

I wish his HS coaches (former LSU players) would have told him not to use LSU in this way.

I really am kinda shocked for what he signed for. I was thinking it would take at least 750 k or so. What's crazy to me is that it's not life changing money at all. Even if he gets to the bigs in say an amazing three years he still has to play five more before he gets any kind of decent money.

He could've gone to LSU played three years been a high pick and got a huge life changing signing bonus and an education.

This just makes zero sense.

I blame his parents, no way would I have let my son pass up college for a mere $300K.

Apparently the Longhi family doesn't value education the way the Andolini family does.

Yeah. I just don't see it. I don't know the specifics of the deal, but it doesn't take that long for most grads in a technical field to gross $300k.

The kid will very likely never see the MLB. I couldn't imagine passing up the opportunity to play ball at The Box and chase co-eds for anything less than $700k. At that point, I can't blame anybody. Minor league ball is work.

Ok so lets assume it takes him an amazing 3 years to make it to the big leagues. The day he is called up he makes major league minimum, which is approx. $440,000 or $2,716 per game pro-rated. I consider that decent money. Lets say it takes him the average 5 years to make it up.. he would be 22/23 making 440k a year..

Or he could have gone to LSU played 3 years and made less money in the draft than he signed for today... Happens all the time.

Since we're talking about averages, maybe 1-2% of 30th round picks make it to the bigs.

So what is your point? The kid was paid like a 4th rounder not a 30th rounder.

You must have missed it. You were speaking as if he would make it to the majors, so I pointed out he very likely won't.

The kid got way better money than he should have at that spot, he was fortunate that the Sox had that cash leftover after signing the rest of their picks. Although, he was better than a 30th rd pick.

I don't blame an 18 year old for getting dollar bill signs in their eyes. It's tough to turn down that kind of money at 18, and my initial point was it's really not that much money for a college grad in a technical field.

Obviously it's pure speculation on my part, but I bet he will one day regret not going to LSU. I wish him the best, but just my thoughts.

And if he's good enough to make it to the bigs, he still will even if he goes to LSU except he got a free education and won't have burned himself out on the AA bus tour.
