re: So.... How many NCs did Les leave on the table?

I guess the answer to your question is, how much of Les' responsibility was it to stop Alabama's rise to prominence, or how much do we view this as inevitable on their part?
--------------------------------------------------
Carlos that is an interesting and terrific observation.

I think Alabama, USCw, Texas, Michigan and Ohio State can get and stay dominant anytime they get a better than average coach. Alabama was the the biggest prize after several years of being a non factor in football. Its now Texas. Saban realized this while at LSU. So in some ways it was inevitable.
With that said I think u have to give Les alot of credit for doing everything in his power to stay on the same level with Alabama. No one was going to stop Saban from getting great players and coaching great with the support and tradition of an Alabama. Your only strategy had to be try to keep up because the bar in winning the SEC West was just raised significantly. When u look at Les' record and his championships, u have to agree that he's at least kept it very close.
Alabama advantages against LSU have been scheduling and QB play. 2 yrs ago LSU had to play an extra game in Atlanta while Alabama took notes. But that was a terrific team that they had and there is no doubt that they were 1 of the 2 best teams that yr. but still very fortunate break for them. Last yr if either, much less both LSU or A&M dont play Florida things would be different. Also LSU got the better of Alabama in that game every where but the scoreboard. They were surprisingly more physical and had the better athletes, even with all the injuries and the suspension of the Badger. But regardless of how Alabama got there, they are there now 3 out of 4 is 3 out of 4. They are on a roll and have some really good players wanting to play there.

I think this year is the first time that LSU has fallen behind them, at least in the minds of the press, since Saban has been there. But Les is adapting and started changing his recruiting strategy last year and why he went out and got a terrific OC in Cam Cameron. Without a doubt, he realizes that u cant just line up and run the ball, punt and play defense against every team. The game is evolving and now having a good offense or system is now just as important as a good defense and he realizes this.I think the Landon Collins decision has changed the way Les looks at building his team.

Really enjoyed your post, some excellent points.

So... While debatable, I think even Rantards are accurate when they say Miles left 4 NCs on the table, but don't understand why this has to be an indictment against the man.

2 is more like it. 2006 and 2011.

If you want to compare last year to 2006 then ok but that 2006 team was way more talented.

2 min 3 max

2006 (What a team!! and yes I was at the Auburn game-the play calling and cheating refs still haunt me

& 2011 (replay Bama did not help) however Miles and team were sleepwalking- coaching miscues for sure

Surprisingly 2012, all we have to do is stop the last Bama drive and we skull f_ c _ ND

First off, the wording in the OP is horrible. It insinuates that it's solely our head coach's fault that we haven't won these championships.

In fact it often comes down to scheduling, referees(2006 says hi), injuries, suspensions, and plain ole luck(OSU kicker missing a field goal, etc)

We have had truly championship caliber teams 3 times under Les. 2006, 2007, and 2011.

2005, 2010, and 2012 were still really good top 10 caliber teams, but we weren't great those years IMO.

I think it's a credit to Les that we've been in contention this many years in his tenure. If we keep putting out championship caliber teams we'll get the breaks and lift another crystal ball.

Geaux Tigers.

The correct answer is 2.
2006 and 2011. But I blame espn more for 2011 and pushing bama to get a rematch after we already beat them.

None. In 2011 we had one of the strongest teams ever...when the Gumps also had one of the strongest teams ever. Mile was "out coached" and our players were "out played". If anything, Les left his playbook at home on the kitchen table.

Anyone blaming 2006 on coaching is laughable too.

If we beat Florida we would have been in the BCS title game and our not beating Florida was because the guys on offense could not hold on to the fricking ball.

That defeat was squarely on the players and had nothing to do with coaching.

2011 was a terrible game plan and terrible performance by the players, but that one goes on Miles.

Exactly. The players lost to Florida in 2006 by making bonehead mistakes.

Jacob Hester fumbled on the goal line when we were about to go up 14-0 in the first quarter.

We open the third quarter by fumbling the kickoff, giving up a safety - 2 pts. and the ball to Florida.

And then to top it all off, with the game still in reach, Jamarcus throws two INTs down the stretch. One even bounced off Buster Davis' fricking helmet. Literally hit him in the head but he didn't catch it.

So yeah....the players lost that game. Seems like we had a pretty good game plan and plenty of opportunities to win. The fact that people blame Miles is laughable, and the idea that "2006 was a championship team" has become the biggest myth in LSU football history.

2006 was indeed a NC caliber team. I blame the players for Florida loss but AU is squarely on coaching and refs. It's hard for me to come down too hard on the coaches bc its so obvious the refs were there to negate anything LSU did but the offensive gameplan still didn't help.

re: So.... How many NCs did Les leave on the table?

I just want to point out that all top tier teams have some years when things don't fall into place despite the talent. My friend is an Ohio state fan and he has the same thoughts about their teams. They left several nc's on the table in the 90's with John cooper. Those teams were far more talented than their more recent tressel teams that played in or won a nc. Florida, Uga, USC, tx, bama, and a lot if others have near misses to regret in the last few years..

My point being, it's ok to talk about how close Lsu was to winning more. No need to be so overly sensitive about miles. Just take it for what it is-everything has to fall into place for a nc, not just talent.
