Fortunately sometime in his early eighties Tom woke up and realized he can't take it all with him and started spending like a fiend.

I think he also realized that winning=more profits and to get there you need a good team. Not always the case, but in the Saints case that is what occurred.

I think he realized with the synergies he could drastically reduce the cost of running the Pelicans. With the Saints facilities in place and the league sweeting the deal it was too good to pass up. More to the point, he probably wants to see some success before he kicks the bucket and add to his legacy.

About five years ago. The Benson you see in public is a mix of audio recordings, animatronics, and some Weekend at Bernie's style slight of hand.
