But to go from where we were last season to where we want to be, you are looking at 25 game swing, I don't think one player, unless he is Lebron, Kobe, etc. can do that.

To be clear, I definitely don't think Holiday alone is going to account for 20+ more wins than last year. He'll be good for at least 5-10 more than Vasquez, though, IMO.

Another reason why I have my reservations. A healthy Gordon hasn't been around for almost 3 years.

Yeah, we all should have reservations about that, but the potential for his impact when healthy is just too much to give up on now.

a healthy eric Gordon and an improved AD could. those are both hypotheticals currently though

My point is that a lot of things have to go right for us to be a playoff contender and a lot of things would have to go wrong for us to keep that top 5 pick, and I don't like that.

On paper, the trade is great. We got a proven player for an unproven guy with a bum knee and a nameless player who is in high school. But it could very easily put us in an mediocre position with not much room for change.

Playoffs this year will really depend upon a healthy Gordon, though, unless we get a really good SF.

My biggest hope for this draft was getting rid of Gordon. It just breaks my heart we are pinning our hopes on him for the 3rd straight season, with really nothing to show for it. Once McLemore was still there, I got really excited. We could have drafted him, had a good replacement for Gordon and then found a workable trade deal for Gordon (who still has to have more value than Vasquez). There has to be another big move on the horizon..

Have to factor in his health too.

None of those guys are even close to Jrue's level. Jennings probably wants more than him as well.

can you delve deeper into this? What makes Jrue SO much better as a player in your eyes?

Mostly his elite defense. Jennings and Ellis are inefficient chuckers with no defense so I don't think they could even hold Jrue's jock. I didn't realize how good Teague was this year but I don't hear him praised around the league as being one of the best perimeter defending point guards in the league. If he could put up 8 assists a game on that Philly roster then I could see him easily get near 10 a game here.

meh, that's inconsequential. Playmaking isn't limited to assists. I agree about his defense, although I wouldn't say elite. Jrue's value is only going to be defense and getting AD the ball.

I will say this, after the trade I saw posters labeling him as a Top 5 PG. He's not on that level.

Yep, which is why people saying we are a no doubt playoff team now need to take off the red blue and gold glasses.

This team has all of the potential in the world, but they have a long way to go and a lot of factors will be in play.

We have a no doubt playoff team if EG stays relatively healthy.

I'm not sure what other factors are really in play that would prevent us from that.

someone not named Aminu or Miller running the 3

i'm sure Demps is on top of that though.

That's the most gigantic of "ifs"

We don't have a 3; We only have one true 5 on the roster; Davis' health presented a yellow flag last season; Will Rivers become a contributor off the bench?; Is Jason Smith 100%?; A lot of questions on the bench.

Just about all this is either overblown or will work itself out

I don't think Davis or Smith's health is an issue

We'll find a 3. The season isn't starting tomorrow

Lopez, Davis & Smith can all play the 5. And I'd assume we'd still try and add another guy

Rivers might suck, but he can't get much worse. I think we can win whether or not he contributes or not

Smith, I'll agree, last year was a freak injury.

Davis, however, had a lot of little injuries before getting shut down. For a tall and slender guy like him, those leg injuries add up. You at least have to be cautious with him.

Not as much money to work with now.

He is very important going forward. We need him to either be Gordon's backup or Jrue's backup to make Grieves more expendable.

The Pels are more talented, yes, but the bench is still thin(Rivers is too critical). I wouldn't say they are a lock for the playoffs in the Western Conference with a healthy EG. You're talking about a team realistically finishing fourth or fifth (depending on the Mavs' moves) in their own division. The Warriors, Nuggets, Thunder,Clippers and I think the Blazers will all be right in the thick of things.

Even then you're looking at a 6-8 seed. Again, this all depends on AD. If he becomes a budding superstar, yes, we are a playoff team.

Actually, I think with the addition of Holiday and, presumably, the acquisition of at least one more contributor before the beginning of the season (you know this roster isn't set) that the Pelicans will have a bench that compares favorably with most teams. Seems to me their second unit should be a hell of a lot better than last season.
