I know the board members that interviewed Petrino for the LSU job, they both walked out of the interview saying "what a piece of shite."

wow..you have to be fricking kidding me. This has to be the dumbest thing i've ever heard in my life. If saban stayed at LSU we probably would have won the title every year. At LSU he would get all the top louisiana players and still cherry pick the whole dang country. He was just about to start doing all that when he left for miami. You will see when he fricks alabama and leave them for dead. they not gone fair as well as LSU if saban leaves.

Petrino is a shithead, but IMO, LSU wins the NC in '06 if he's hired. That's not to say he would have been the best long term choice, but that offense in '06 (and maybe '05 too) would have been devastating. If he could have brought in a solid DC with him, that '06 team wins the NC and destroys people.

This sentiment is totally unfounded, in my view. Alabama has no intrinsic advantages over LSU. If anything, our captive recruiting base is actually superior.

re: Five candidates have emerged in Stanley "Skip" Bertman's head coaching search

Saban has lucked out with some banner in-state classes during his time at Bama. He's also the best recruiter in the last 20 years of college football so no matter where he ended up, his re-introduction into the SEC would have been successful if not dominant. In that sense I agree that Bama offered no long-term, intrinsic advantages.

That said, for all their faults and laughable historical claims, Bama's historical success begets future dominance. They don't share the inferiority complex that many LSU fans have, and therefore they would inevitably revert to the success they expect to have. Bama fans would never settle for an AD who suggests the goal is merely to be in the contention for championships. Alleva is actually not incorrect in a sense, but to articulate that is to understand an inherent complacency in the fanbase. A Bama AD would be crucified and summarily teabagged for publicly expressing that sentiment.

of course Nutt would've sucked. That's why Saban was pushing him. Anyone leaving head coach or similar position never wants the successor to do as well, thus the shitty recommendations.

Skip did it with Smoke.
Arnsparger did it with Archer.

Never, ever listen to the outgoing legend/coach. They are thinking of themselves and their legacy, not the school and program.

it was pretty bleak because saban left us at a terrible time

a month or so earlier and LSU would have had Spurrier
waited too long and all that BS with Huizenga flying into BR on the jet was infuriating.

To this day, I still think we could have kept in Baton Rouge if Bertman would have opened the pocket book a little more. He didn't realize what he had there and tried to be cheap. (Same reason he let Tiger Stadium degrade to an embarassing level)

I distinctly remember him saying that LSU "Wasn't going to get into a bidding war with the Dolphins for Saban." Blame Skip for that (Should have went to TAF and come up with a much better package) and blame for prolonging the agony far too long. It takes Two to Tango.

While all that nonsense was playing out, Florida hired Urban and USCe hired Stevie Visor, both of whom LSU could have procurred the services of, or least had a legitimate shot at.

Everything worked out fine though, since our AD and so many LSU fans are OK with just "Competing for Championships", two loses a year, Chicken Bowl's and yearly game management fiasco's on National Television. That's OK. We're arse kickers at "Competing."

Meanwhile, over to the Northeast a little ways, it's 3 out of the last 4 and counting.

Cam Cameron to the rescue, hopefully!

Yeah, Saban's last two teams drilled Arkansas to the tune of 55-24 and 43-14. That does not speak to Nutt's ability to prepare a team. Saban seemingly wanted to rot away his progress with the team with a totally incompetent replacement.

I agree with this statement. Unfortunately, the historical inferiority complex currently manifests itself here as a repeated mantra that LSU is incapable of constructing a dominant dynasty and that LSU fans should be grateful that our lil' old school is a "close second" to Bama and Saban. Absolutely infuriates me, to be candid.

Who would the rant have interviewed besides one of these 5 candidates.

I honestly can't remember who the hottest coaches were back then except for petrino, frenz, miles, and tuberville.

re: Five candidates have emerged in Stanley "Skip" Bertman's head coaching search

Sabah used MSU and LSU as steeping stones to obtain a job in the upper level of his profession.

He realized NFL players have the upper hand on most coaches and can't be bullied so he came back to college.

He wanted to coach an upper level college overall program and let's not kid ourselves those would be Ohio st, Alabama,ND, Penn st, and FSU and out of those 5 programs only Alabama was looking for a coach.

Sabah can now be compared to and maybe surpass the bear thus cementing his name in college football lore. What legendary coach would he surpass at LSU that was as wide known and respected through out the country.

What? Am I in a Delorean? Have I gone back to 1985?

LSU is an "upper level college overall program."

Spurrier, who mentioned only won 1 NC at Florida, otherwise they were just competing for championships.

This is really Les Miles greatest sin, he's not Nick Saban, who when all is said and done may go down as one of the top 2-3 coaches of all time. 3 of 4 happened one other time in the modern era. That was Tom Osborne, who didn't win his first until he was on the job for over 20 years, in other words for 20 plus year he was "jsut competiting" for Championships.

I agree for the most part, (its not an inferiority complex to say winning 80% of your games is good) however Alabama was desperate when the got Saban, they almost hired Rich Rod, it had been over a decade since they had won, unrealistic expectations just as easily lead to bad hires and bad seasons.

ETA: I would think constantly measuring success by our old coach and his current team is part of an inferiority complex.

Petrino did not bow out, he was kicked out - I heard it was the worst interview ever and they could not get him out fast enough. One of the reasons Les is not on his Christmas card list - he really wanted the job
