My 2004 mercury saltwater has never failed me, always started and got me home with little routine maintenance and lots of hours. I now also have a 2002 yammy on a different boat and for the last month it has been great. It was rebuilt about 6 months ago but the previous owner (Father in law) kept up with the maintenance Im still partial to my original merc but have nothing bad to say about the yammys

I can speak for only Hopedale and Delacroix areas.....90% of workboats along the canal have Yamahas hangin on the back. Either they're all getting them for free or they buy what's working for others in the area.
Back in the late 90s and early 2000s I worked for a dealer that sold both brands; I wouldn't buy anything Merc today but my old boss who's still in the business says they've made some big improvements in certain HP sizes.

They run the shite out of both of them up on the Great Lakes and that's pretty much the same setup as you guys in LA are running offshore. They'll also run a Suzuki and a lot of 4 stroke Hondas too, though.
