My old man has a 16' aluminum boat and we'd like to try some salt water fishing. Assuming it's a calm day, is this safe to put in at Calcasieu Point?

Yep. The best trout trip I ever had was in a 16' with a 50.

I've seen people in much smaller.

My buddy has a 16' with a 40 and fishes there all the time.

The lake will get rough in a hurry but you can always skirt the edges and run to the north to cross. Just watch the wind.

I've been in a 16' in there a few times. It's not bad.

Pick your days and you'll be fine. I see boats smaller than that on the weir highway all the time

When I was in HS I caught more fish in a 14' aluminum boat with a 25 than you can count. Oh, and one time when I was a real genius, I went to the "seven mile rigs" in that same boat! Funny how growing up makes you more responsible!

You can put in at Calcasieu Point on the LC side or Ellender Bridge on the Sulphur side and be in Turner's Bay or Black Lake in the matter of 15 minutes with no problems at all in a 16' boat with enough shore cover to get back in if the wind kicks up without too much trouble.

It can be done in a 15 foot aluminum, but if you can afford it 17 foot fiberglass v bottem at minimum.

I would like to see when that whaler lands. I bet he kissed that winshield.

That's JAB in the whaler. Hopefully he'll come tell us.

I fish a 13 foot Whaler and I've been out in Big Lake many times. A 16 aluminum flat will be a rough ride on a windy day, but you can go out there almost any day.

Yeah just stay close to the bank in the ship channel. I wouldn't recommend crossing the lake but the channel the salt ditch some of turners will all be very do-able on a calm day.
