The point he made, whether right or wrong, wasn't unreasonable, and is a statement most media members wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. So, I respect that he came out and said it.

I can see why he said it.. Its all about stirring up shite[HENCE THIS THREAD]. But the problem is HE thinks he knows what he is talking about. That's scary............

I don't have time to type a long response, but that's complete bullshite. Right now Federer has the greatest resume, and it's not that close. Nadal is an all time great also and clearly in the GOAT discussion though. I get tired of people tearing one down to prop the other up

Sampras v. Fed (in their prime) Who wins?

Tough call and depends on surface.........

If we had these two players in their prime playing all 4 GS, I think Sampras wins the US and Australian Open and Fed takes Wimbledon and French.

People love doing that with nadal. But but but it's only because he is the best ever on clay. Lucky for him, that's one of the surfaces they play the game on.

It sucks that these guys are half a generation apart. I really think they played 1-2 Grand Slam matches when each were in their true prime. Outside of that they were either on the rise or the decline.

I've said it before, when at their peaks, both Nadal and Djokovic were better than Fed. I believe Fed's incredible consistency is his biggest strong-point, but this was greatly benefited by the attrocious competition he was beating early in his career.

Was it really "atrocious", or was fed just THAT dominant during those years? I think it's the latter.

Old grass or new grass? Wimbledon changed the composition of its courts in 2001 to slow them down and benefit baseline players.

Have you looked at the guys he was beating? Andy Murray would be a 5-6 time Slam winner against that field.

They were awful.

All titles are not created equally; there was time during Federer's run where the competition in men's tennis was terrible. There were numerous articles about it at the time, and while some wrote those opinions off as American jingoism, the fact remains that now we're witnessing a much stronger group in the men's field.

That said, none of that is Federer's fault; he's not responsible for his competition. But the fact remains that Nadal owns him head to head. Sure, some of that is the fact that Nadal is a bad matchup but at some point you have to believe that Nadal is better.

Even as of RIGHT NOW, how can you not put Nadal in your top five?

Ok but Fed has won 10 major titles since that first loss to Nadal who's won 12, so while they've been playing together it's been close and those 2 extra titles don't offset the other 7 even if the competition was "shitty." and to the people brijging up well early on Nadal was young, I say well lately Fed has been old. Nadal hasn't achieved GOAT status yet...he may or may not get there one day but right now he isn't.

I think whoever summarized Kornheiser's comments did the best job of compiling my thoughts on the subject.

To say definitively that Rafa at this point is the GOAT, especially for someone like Kornheiser who doesn't avidly follow tennis, would be ridiculous and far from thread-worthy. However, like someone said, it's more that Rafa's current run has successfully and inarguably destroyed the idea that Federer is the indesputable GOAT, and media members are starting to take note.

Befor Rafa, Federer was to tennis what MJ is to NBA. It wasn't a discussion. Rafa's run has brought that foundation down. Now it's possible to make arguments for multiple players, and that will especially include Rafa if he wins a couple more.

So, while Nadal regularly beats Roger's arse, he's also way more likely to lose to the Lukas Rosals of the world. I have to give consistent dominance weight in this argument.

It can't be understated the pathetic and I mean PATHETIC competition Fed faced during that time.

That streak started at the 2004 French Open. Nadal won his first grand slam at the 2005 French Open. Try again.

Didn't Tomic say a couple of years ago that he'll be the GOAT?

Bobby was pimping some 18 year-old Aussie who won a match in the French Open. I've never seen him play, but reports are he seems like he could be a good one.

There's no obvious prodigy on the way like when Rafa was in the junior ranks.

Marcos Baghdatis is not an elite tennis player. Andy Roddick, bless his heart, well he isn't either.
Marat Safin was great like once a year when he had his meds under control.
Agassi was a great player, but not when he was going up against Fed.
Lleyton Hewitt....oh, I'm sorry I just puked a bit in my mouth.
