While PS4 itself won’t block pre-owned games, Sony has said any DRM is up to publishers, a sentiment which has been said before.

According to SCEA boss Jack Tretton, “the DRM decision for third-party games will be up to publishers,” he told GTTV. First-party titles will not have DRM, which is something Sony can control.

It will not control or force any such means or lack thereof on thrid-parties.

PS4 will not require an always online connection and, it will not block the use of second hand titles, according to Tretton last night and Sony Worldwide boss Shuhei Yoshida back in February.

Yoshida said that any DRM on used games will be left up to the publisher in question, so today’s comment isn’t really a surprise.

The interview with GTTV just concluded and should be up shortly.

Is this the way around Sony being the bad guy? Put it off on the publishers?

PS4 games aren't out of the DRM woods yet.

I could see why a publisher would lock their game with an online access pass or something for PS4 since Xbox One is already pretty much locked for them. It evens the playing field and makes more money for them off of both consoles vs just the Xbox.

They already do that today, right? Lots of games require online passes now. And if you have a used game, that pass needs to be purchased as the old one is unique.

But, didn't EA say they were doing away with this online pass thing? Or was that something else altogether?

If you read Xbox One's official licensing announcement, instead of reading it off of sensationalist blogger websites, Microsoft takes the same stance.

If this is how they are getting around telling people some hard truths, it's going to be really embarrassing for them, especially considering they released this mock instructional video poking fun at the entire thing.

Maybe they accidentally edited out "Step 2: Have your friend go online and buy the game, making step 1 completely pointless."

Edit: Just reread and saw that I missed they are saying *their* DRM policy will apply to first party games. Okay, so their little video can still apply.

You think a publisher is going to lock a game that is already locked?

They still make money off Xbox used game sales. They make nothing off of PS4 used game sales.

Which one do you think they are more likely to restrict open access to?

Microsoft said it was up to developers 5 days ago, its hardly back tracking. Sony just blatantly lied to one up Microsoft. An act of a broke down company.

Wait, as I understand it, Microsoft is limiting how much and to whom you can lend a game. Sony is saying the same rules apply tomorrow as they do today, right?
