My salary has taken a hit over the past couple of years and I just can't keep up. My wife has always stayed home with the kids but unfortunately I need to start leaning on her for a little income. She used to teach and then was a college recruiter on the academic side. She was valedictorian and got two degrees in 4 years of college so she's very intelligent. However, she doesn't want to do the Mary Kay, Avon type stuff because she doesn't want to be the person that makes family and friends cringe when she calls them.

We've both been racking our brains trying to come up with something flexible (20 hrs a week) that she could do. I don't really know anything about Real Estate (except that the market sucks right now) would that be something you guys think would be a good alternative to a traditional part-time job?

Thanks in advance guys.

My mother just got into real estate. Shes in her 50s and loves it. However, its not really a part time job once you commit to it, IMO. She will want to work longer than 20 hrs a week. But I think with this job, you have alot of potential to make some really good money, if you believe in the work.

She does that now on a limited basis (once a week) but when school starts back we have volleyball, football practice, youth group etc. for the kids.

That's what I figured but if she is "independent" couldn't she just handle the houses she wants to show or is that not how it works. Again, I'm clueless about the typical day in the life of an agent.

p.s. We only need her to make about $800/month.

I know, but if she goes the traditional route she'll have to be able to get off in time (2:00) to pick up the kids from school. Otherwise, we'll be paying someone to watch the kids and thus defeating the purpose.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys. Please keep em coming.

Oh ok I see. Well with $800 a month you can find an easy job. With Real Estate you are on commission, so you dont know when you are going to get a check until a house closes. And that doesn't work out all the time.

Since you mentioned your wife was a valedictorian and has multiple degrees, she could probably be a tutor?

Have you considered tutoring? It sounds like she is smart so tutoring should come easy. If she still has connections in education maybe then can help find some students that need help.

I've mentioned this to her before and she's not opposed to it. I guess she just doesn't know how to get started. I'll bring it back up to her though.

But theoretically, she could just work as much as she wants to? Or is that not how it works?

Old South, if you are going to go the tutoring route, why not look into one of the professional tutoring centers (Sylvan Learning Center, etc). I'm not sure if they have them in your area, but that sounds exactly like what you are looking for in terms of flexibility.

Another option is medical transcription. I know a couple of people that do this from home and make very good money, but it does required dedicated time...

I think it's a good idea but couldn't she make more doing it on her own? I don't know.

This sounds very interesting. Do you know anything else about it?

I was thinking the same thing. You are also close to Southeastern so she can post some adds on campus.

Is she a musician? Private lessons can bring in cash.

Do you have a pool? Swimming lessons in the summer can bring in a lot of money but I think she would have to pass a certification before being qualified.

I would try local Doctors/Dentists/Vet offices. They are always looking for part time front desk people.

Yes she can, theorectically. However, I believe thats not how it works. You never know what kind of client you are going to get. You maybe working more or less sometimes depending on a variety of factors. I just think if she goes into Real Estate shes going to be working a lot more than 20hrs a week, IYAM. Someone else who actually works in RE might be able to give you better feedback. I'm just going on convos with my mom.

Web design. It is easy if she's not too retarded/lazy to learn it, and women always bitch about not having anything "creative" to do.

My wife doesn't bitch about anything and works tirelessly (5 kids). I just think she would be overwhelmed at the idea of web design.

ETA: Before someone says something about us having 5 kids and do we know what causes that etc. Yes we do and we were doing fine until I got laid off 2 yrs ago and started working two jobs to keep up. She doesn't want me doing that anymore and I'm not sure that I can.
