Not sure how TOPS fits in all of this per NCAA rules.

TOPS is big for LSU baseball. I bet the majority of the Louisiana guys on the team have TOPS and may not even have a "baseball scholarship." They were saying this weekend that Sean McMullen just graduated with a 3.73 GPA.

TOPS is a base scholarship. Even TOPS Honors doesn't cover the entire amount a student incurs in additional book costs, residence and fees. LSU has additional academic scholarships based on objective academic criteria which can also help with costs. Other states are now following the TOPS model.

But I'm also not sure how the NCAA officially views TOPS, but I'm sure it's legit.

As for Sean McMullen and his 3.73

I'll be adding some stuff to the original post with the draft upcoming, but one quick note....we can probably forget about Bradley. He was in Houston yesterday for their final pre draft workout.

I never saw him coming. MLB teams LOVE black guys with any potential at all and they all sign even when they drop.

Deichmann is overrated. Didn't even post a top 3 avg on his high school team the past 2 years

Yeah I was never counting on him or Marshall. But if we can get the other 10 we'll be in great shape.

Would love for Marshall to come in and take Nola's spot in the rotation or bump to Saturday's with Poche on Friday, but it sounds like unless the money is just drastically off, he will be in someones farm system very soon. Kid has solid stuff on a prototypical frame. Will see his name called early, unfortunately for us.

ETA: Just heard on Sports Today that Mac sent a letter out to teams, just like Deichmann did, stating he intendeds to go to LSU so please do not draft me. Very interesting...

Yeah, doesn't sound promising in this interview at Minute Maid: LINK

Brother Martin's Greg Deichmann is headed to LSU. Diechmann told MLB scouts he will not sign. Dad says "his heart is at LSU." #wgnosports

Just said Byrd and Diechmann both sent letters to MLB offices saying they were going to LSU. Marshall is slated to room with both of them and said unless he gets drafted Thursday, he is leaving for BR on Friday. Fingers crossed!

ETA: Marshall stated unless he goes 1st round Thursday, he is coming to LSU Friday to move-in.

Seems like he definitely may come here but non first rounders can make a lot of money too, right?

Yes, still possible to make big money in a later round, but unlikely. Most teams slot their first 10 rounds worth of picks and have a money line they operate by. Say like 10-12 mill for the first 10 rounds. Now they can allocate that much how they see fit, so if someone is a no sign, they can throw that money else where. MLB signings can get really goofy.

yes they can still be offered very generous signing bonuses. See Zach Lee who was supplemental 1st rd and rec a huge bonus above what would normally come from that slot. I think he got like 5.4 million. If Marshall can slide to say round 3, we get him.

Wasn't this prior to the MLB instituting the limits on what teams could spend on draft picks?

Lee got 5.25 mill at the 28th overall pick. That year he was tied with Manny Machado for the 3rd highest signing bonus after Bryce Harper and Jameson Taillon (1st and 2nd overall picks). Again, money gets really weird with the MLB Draft, so expect anything haha

Here is a link showing the 2014 MLB Draft Signing Bonus Pool and how it is broken down. The team which takes each player we are interested in will dictate a lot. As you will see, a team like Houston or Miami pose a huge threat because they do have a lot of wiggle room for what they can pay in regards to signing bonuses. Whereas a team like the Orioles or Yankees are kind of handcuffed as to what they can really offer.

ETA: Here is a quick rundown on how the draft pool works for a team, this team in the article being the Rockies. LINK
