my quest for store bought sensation salad dressing....

well, I finally bought all of the clear ones with sensation ingredients. its taken me a few months.
2nd place, Girard's champagne dressing
(I know I know, but I like that bitter taste that a good sensation has)
1st place, LaMartinique, true French vinaigrette
as close as it gets, but not nearly the same thing.
why is there no bottled sensation salad dressing? someone could get rich in south la with a good recipe.
anyone know of any good bottled sensation dressings? I just googled and found HANLEYS at Ralphs...has anyone tried that one? can't believe I missed it.

Hanley's is good. Any independent has it

I've never tried any store-bought ones--it's pretty easy to make at home. I use the recipe from the River Roads cookbook (I think it's the original one with the white cover).
Vegetable oil
Garlic
Lemon juice
Romano cheese
Salt/pepper
I keep it in the fridge for a couple of months and never had a problem with it turning.

I think I had Hanley's and it was good. Look for it at Calandros or Calvin's

There's a local company that bottles it. I bought a bottle from one of those tasting stands in Calvin's about a year ago.

Easy to make & better than any bottle brand.
But you do have have to use a quality cheese (not the one in the can) & use a garlic crusher. This helps release the oils into the dressing.
I also use this minus the cheese to marinate chicken for the grill & when chopped into a salad, is the bomb. And, when you toss it on cubed red potatoes with sliced onions & roasted in the over, is a meal in itself. So good!

Calvin's use to carry Shelby's catering Sensation salad dressing. It was sooooo perfect. It was back there by their chicken salad. She also had fantastic chicken salad and pimento cheese spread. The past two times that I have been in town and gone to Calvin's, I haven't seen it though. So maybe they quite carrying her stuff.

Is "sensation" salad dressing pretty much a B.R. thing? I mean I looked online and apparently it's spread further, but, frankly, I don't think I know of anyone who's ever mentioned it or eaten it. Does it have that "Johnny's Pizza" iconic stature?
btw, it takes about five minutes to make a salad dressing that's better than virtually anything you can buy in a store.

My Dad was friends with Jake Staples who supposedly invented the dish. Have had this recipe for a long time
1/2 to 3/4 lb. of finely ground or shredded imported Peccorino Romano cheese
2 cups of olive oil
Juice of 4 lemons
4 tsp white balsamic vinegar
8 cloves of garlic, pressed with pulp and all juice
Salt
Freshly ground lack pepper to taste
Just mix all together

He did invent it. My father was an old friend of his as well.
I make it and leave the cheese out. I add the cheese to the salad. I find if I store it with the cheese it gets gooey. I also use a combination of canola oil and extra virgin olive oil. It lightens it just a bit.
