I'm looking for a small composite of some of the best forward thinking Italian restaurants in the nation. I'm looking for traditional and contemporary, just not strictly heavy red sauces coated with cheese.

Tuscan, Venice cuisine and Sicilian are all fair game.

Right?

I was excited when I saw this because I thought he had a list.

Then, when I opened...

:disappoint:

1. Sal and Judy's , Lacombe,LA

My favorite place ever, by far. Redfish or softshell crab with Nicholas sauce (jumbo lump crab, shrimp, mushrooms in a cream based orgy)

Sal is the man

I'd have a hard time narrowing down the Italian restaurants in NYC to a top five, much less nationwide. But I'll give it a try:
Marea
Babbo
Del Posto
L'Artusi
Maialino

Could probably come up with another five that would be easily interchangeable with those. Tough category.

ETA: Just to be clear, those are all in NYC.

Cablewood has it. Most of the Batali and Bastianich are exceptional including Becco and Babbo but Del Posto is their 4 star Italian and it's phenomenal.
