Eliminating of verbal commitments.

Why doesn't the NCAA allow players to send in their LOI whenever they choose to? It would force players to make a solid decision and not rush into a commitment. It would help coaches plan for a class much better space wise. It doesn't seem to me that verbal commitments are worth a whole lot anyway so why not change the rules to allow early LOI's to be sent in with a clause that says a player can't commit until his senior year?

What if something happens between now and signing day? Emergency in the family or player is injured and can't play again. The school would have fulfill their offer? Imagine the paperwork to cancel players LOI if there was a coaching change between the time they signed and signing day. Too many variables.
Fwiw, I wish they could sign right away or have and early signing day.

You used to be able to sign a LOI but could then break the LOI and sign with another school. Not sure what good the LOI served if you didn't have to honor what you signed.

an early signing period like basketball would be a better option. It would allow the die hard players to sign with their dream schools and would force the attention seeking players to commit to programs before all of the spots fill up

I understand your point but what is two months? If a kid wants to sign in December then he should be able to as opposed to waiting until Feb.

It can help take a lot of the stress off of some of the players, coaches, parents, recruiting budgets, etc.
Some people want to get the process over with earlier, I don't see a problem with giving them that opportunity.

Honestly I'm sure under extreme circumstances, things could be done for a kid but it would eliminate all this D'haquille Williams type verbals. Or these players who flip on signing day and ruin a spot for another kid who really wanted to be there. I'm not saying a kid has to sign early but I agree with Project, if a kid wants to sign early and get it over with let him do it.

those were conference LOIs

This is an awful terrible idea. Pressuring kids into locking themselves into a school before or during that season which ANYTHING can happen with a coaching staff or more offers from other schools is an awful idea. 17/18 year olds rarely can make their mind up...why make it that much harder on them?

Dont really see the big deal with commits that change their minds and sign with a different school
In this hypothetical situation, you have a QB that sends you a LOI at the end of his Junior year or whatever, and then decides another school is a better fit and he wants to go there, youre just going to be like "Too bad sucker youre stuck with us!!"
I dont want a guy that doesnt want to be at LSU.
