So Linklater hopes to start shooting the sequel to Dazed and Confused this fall in Austin.

It doesn't sound like the principal characters will be reprising their roles though I wouldn't be surprised to see Pink and Wooderson make cameos or have small supporting roles.

It's supposedly set in the same Universe but at college.

Load of crap. Even using the word sequel is asinine when not a single person from the original will be in it. Spiritual Sequel? I like his movies but he sounds like a douche.

Well, John Hughes and Kevin Smith have been very successful using the "spiritual" sequel technique. I imagine this would take place around the early 90s and reference some of the events and places in the first movie. The time gap is about right as Dazed an Confused took place about 25-30 years in the past.

The nostalgia level for the 90s is about at the level that it was for the 70s. I could see it working. We'll see.

The 90s didnt have an identity like the 70s did. So that doesnt sound like a good movie

We already have rules of attraction for the late 80s and Pie for the 90s.

I disagree completely. The music, clothes, slacker, gen X generation did have a defined identity.

My point is if you want to have any of the original actors reprise their roles, you have to move the timeline forward 20 years or so. If you want to find out what happened to Pink, Wooderson, Donny, Mel and O'bannon, you have to let them age. The 90s seems the ideal time period to make another period movie at this point.

From what I read, calling it a sequel, spiritual or not, is a stretch. The universe that Dazed and Confused is in is pretty much supposed to be this universe. So if you take away all of the charcters in it then it is just another stand alone movie. It is just going to be a college comedy with similar style, which isn't surprising because it's made by the same person.

I think he just called it a "spiritual sequel" to get a little more buzz around it by associating it with his other succesful movie.

No doubt. Everyone is too old for college so he has to use a new cast and the bean counters probably aren't jazzed so he is trying to tie it to Dazed even though there is no real way to do it.

Not to mention the original was not a hit in the theater so maybe they aren't interested in him doing another movie in a similar vein although college instead of high school.

How is it cynical that he said the movie will not have any of the original cast and then he states it is a Spiritual Sequel?

Sorry but that sounds like a load of crap to me. I said I like his movies. Heck, I didn't say this movie would suck.

Seriously. Linklater's a great film maker and I'm sure this will be good.

Brah, he isn't the first person to do this. Hell, all of Tarantino's movie are spiritual sequels/prequels to each other
