1000 miles from Roger. He may see some ash in a day or two.

How long would it take for an ash cloud to reach him. If at all.

Folks in Montana would talk about when St Helens erupted. Forget how many days it took for them to see crap in the sky.

I'm sure he can feel the heat now. Alaska is tiny.

My place in Alaska is about 600 miles NE from that volcano.

I just called my son & daughter up there. They said no ash to be reported. However, they had 4 inches of snow over the weekend.

My first thought when seeing the title..."Hmmm. I wonder how this will effect Roger the Shrubber?"

Apparently, others had similar thoughts.

yeah, I ain't going to Cold Bay...

When Redoubt erupted I went down there and watched for a bit. There are 4 active Volcanoes you can see from Anchorage and the Kenai.

Those Aleutian and Ak. Peninsula volcanoes, I'll watch with you guys on the news.

Would be something to have another Katmai type eruption.

The explosive outburst at Novarupta (Alaska) in June 1912 was the 20th century’s most voluminous volcanic eruption. Marking its centennial, we illustrate and document the complex eruptive sequence, which was long misattributed to nearby Mount Katmai, and how its deposits have provided key insights about volcanic and magmatic processes. It was one of the few historical eruptions to produce a collapsed caldera, voluminous high-silica rhyolite, wide compositional zonation (51–78 percent SiO2), banded pumice, welded tuff, and an aerosol/dust veil that depressed global temperature measurably.

We had a trace yesterday. I was in a t-shirt fishing in sunshine watching snow fall back toward my house.

In Jan. snow is fine and I love winter snow. Unheard of this time of year, I'm ready for summer. Tourists on the cruise ships are digging it though. Some have never seen snow. They are going nuts in areas where snow still is standing.

Alaska, with the exception of one station in Barrow, has been cooling since 1999. We've had our coldest and snowiest winters the past 5 years.

Ash from Mt. Redoubt damn near brought down a 747. Shut down all 4 engines.
quote:

As the crew of KLM Flight 867 struggled to restart the plane's engines, "smoke" and a strong odor of sulfur filled the cockpit and cabin. For five long minutes the powerless 747 jetliner, bound for Anchorage, Alaska, with 231 terrified passengers aboard, fell in silence toward the rugged, snow-covered Talkeetna Mountains (7,000 to 11,000 feet high). All four engines had flamed out when the aircraft inadvertently entered a cloud of ash blown from erupting Redoubt Volcano, 150 miles away. The volcano had begun erupting 10 hours earlier on that morning of December 15, 1989. Only after the crippled jet had dropped from an altitude of 27,900 feet to 13,300 feet (a fall of more than 2 miles) was the crew able to restart all engines and land the plane safely at Anchorage. The plane required $80 million in repairs, including the replacement of all four damaged engines.

I remember that. Was similar to my event.

Redoubt lightly hiccuped some ash in the middle of the night that got stuck in a low-altitude thermal inversion (no air traffic warnings). I took off in a twin huey at 3 am to hop-scotch down to Kodiak.

Sucked ash. Marbles in the turbines. Lost one engine. Began emergency decent. Lost second engine. Begin autorotation. Hershey squirts in underwear. Got one engine to re-fire, smooth as silk landing. I kiss Harley's arse (our pilot).

Holy shite, I'll bet that was scary as hell. My worst fear is engine failure. We had a plane go down yesterday morning because of that, not volcanic related though.

That wasn't my only flight incident up there during that era. I ended up with the nickname "Crash" for a couple years. Nobody wanted to fly me around.

Yeah, been in a couple if incidents myself. When ever rocky beach is a runway, shite happens. I'm a little more selective about who I fly with these days.
