Big Lake weekend report

Fished Friday afternoon in Joes cove with live shrimp.Rat reds and hardheads. Moved out to the ship channel on the rocks and caught some rat reds and lost a big bull.
Saturday headed straight for West Cove.Fished Oyster Bayou and Rabbit Island. No fish at all and muddy water.Moved out to the Ship Channel towards where Oyster Bayou and found some nice reds around the pipeline rocks.Caught 3 and the hardheads showed up in force. Headed to the weirs and the crabs were so thick you couldn't put any bait on the bottom. Went through the weirs onto the reserve and found bait but no fish at all.
Headed back out to the ship channel and went to the jetties(yes it was windy as frick) but we were able to get to the outside of the west jetties since the wind was out of the S/E. Only caught big Gafstops.
Went back to the camp and didn't go back out Saturday evening since the winds were a sustained 20 knts.
Sunday morning we picked the boat up and trailered to Prien lake. Fished Prien hard.Actually found gulls diving but it was a school of rat reds chasing shrimp. Fished the marshes and caught some rat reds and a few flounder. Not one speckled trout all weekend. The people at Spicers said the brown shrimp are still offshore.Guess that's why there's no specs in the lake because the salinity was high enough on the south end of the lake.
There it is. As detailed a report as I can give.
Big Lake = Crabbing if you just have to go.

Hopefully it'll pick up soon, one of my favorite place to fish when it's on. But when it's off, it's damn near impossible to fine them

I am still sore from the ride in. The wind was turrible. We caught 1 croker and it was small enough to use as bait. @meauxjeaux2 It sounds like you and I made almost the same route around the lake.

semi thread hijack:
Is there an end all, be all thread on fishing tips, etc.?
I am just starting out, and want to learn as much as possible, and I figured I would come to the OB for advice. I can only fish off of banks because I am not OT rich and I don't own a boat. I believe the fish that are in the pond around my house are Carp, Catfish, Bass, and Blue Gill. Any advice would be greatly appreciated (such as what type of lures to use for murky water in the sun/cloud coverage, hook sizes)

I said I'd email you Friday and I didn't. I caught a Dewey(DUI) Thursday night and didn't make it to the lake. My bad.

It's sickening that we used to catch trout at will from 210 to the Jetties and now it's a struggle.
Wonder what happened?
Time to start night fishing at Toledo.
At least there I can relax and catch a buzz.

Was the water muddy up and down the channel? Wind has been crazy last couple of weeks and flags are stiff out of the south as I type. I decided I wasn't going to fight the wind and muddy water this weekend. If the wind will let up it should turn on very quickly. From your report I assume you did not run into Black Lake? Lot of time I can find some good water in there but south wind would have pounded you this weekend.

I fished BL this morning and the wind was brutal. Didn't feel like fighting the wind so we hit black lake and picked up 3 flounder, 2 specks, and 2 reds. Lot of rats mixed in also.
