Does anyone know the names in contention for franchises before they ultimately were named what they are today? I know the Bobcats were almost the Charlotte Flight and Charlotte Dragons. The Pelicans were almost Swamp Dogs and Rogarou.

Texans could've been Apollo or Toros.

Love this name.

Damn. Flight is so much better than the Bobcats, imo.

When the Bullets changed to the Wizards, didn't they have a worse option?

The Baltimore Bombers and St. Louis Stallions were expansion candidates before the NFL chose the Jaguars and Panthers.
The Dallas Stars considered the name "Lone Stars" when they relocated from Minnesota.
Not sure if anyone in an official capacity considered it, but there was some talk of the Washington Nationals being called the Grays.

Toronto almost revived the Huskies name but thought they'd make more money in wake of Jurassic Park.
Toronto T-Rex?

quote:It really is. Especially with the Wright bros and NC (I know I'm stating the obvious here but just in case it slipped anyone's mind). Too bad Bob Johnson decided to go with the most narcissistic team name in sports history.

Ouch.
FWIW, I don't think the "Raptors" is THAT bad.
In fact, instead of the dinosaur, it could be the bird.

Fan voting in Washington had 'Motherfrickers' as the top choice, but Stern killed it

I like the Wizards name, but Express is so much cleaner.

Dallas "North Stars" would have been a little off, like Utah Jazz.

Memphis Express. Move was blocked because they play in FedEx forum. Can't change a name for a sponsor.
Toronto Huskies. Original NBA Canadian team that played in the 1950s. Name was blocked because it looked way too similar to the Minnesota Timberwolves logo. So instead they settled on Raptors.
Someone beat me to it. I AM NOTHING.

The franchise conducted a "name the team" contest[6] and eventually selected two finalists "Timberwolves" and "Polars" in December 1986.
