re: Iberville Housing Project in New Orleans to be Demolished

I never understood why you place projects within walking distance to one of the worlds largest tourist attractions. Move them away from the French Quarter, create distance.

The FQ wasn't always what it is now. It wasn't always a Disney works for drunks on vacation.

Unfortunately, this disease afflicts way more people than just Louisiana politicians.

Exactly.

They could use this prime RE to generate income, instead they turn it into something that will cost money, then be turned into a pig pen.

fricking ridiculous that this did not happen immediately after Katrina.

Well to be fair, they tore down all of the other ones, so I guess they couldn't piss the natives off too bad all at once.

If we are being forced to provide housing for the misfits, I do like the idea of a more spread out updated way of doing things like other cities figured out 25 years ago.

A baseball stadium would fit perfectly there. Then we could move the Zephyrs to the quarter and start the process of turning NOLA into a 3 sport city when we pull the Marlins out of Miami and rename them the Redfish.

I love that idea, too bad it's not within the realm of possibilities...

People fail to realize that the tourism industry is flourishing on the backs of low income prep cooks and dish washers that live in said projects... I know atleast a handful personally.

But never mind the facts, lets move these guys out to no east

Yeah, 821 low income units, 250 moderate, 325 market rate, with retail.

Should give the current residents time to reload before they return.

who on earth would pay market rate to live in a unit where you are outnumbered 3-1 by subsidized units in the complex?

A lot of people in the project actually do work. The pay isn't so great, so for many it's hard to afford more than the projects. I would say the average line cook only makes $10-12.
A lot of restaurants. A lot of porters, valets, street performers... etc.

You move everyone way out to the east, then prices will rise, and it isn't like that eliminates all crime.
With the new projects come security systems, gated entry for some, and tons of cameras. While there is still crime at the river garden, the Fischer and Florida are not in the news as much, River Garden is still better than it was before, and the Magnolia, now called Harmony Oaks, looks nicer than most of the apartment buildings in BR. Gates all around, inground pool, controlled access.

Who is going to pay market rate for the same place someone is getting for $300 bucks or less? And to live in the projects.

I was also wondering this

completely eliminating any housing incentive to better oneself to the point of not qualifying for subsidized housing. yep, perfect plan there. nothing could go wrong....

On the original 23-acre site, plans call for creating 304 public housing units, mostly town homes and multi-family buildings, allowing the 440 families living at Iberville to return. HANO also plans to build 261 moderate-income units and 315 market-rate units.

Up to 16 of the original Iberville buildings will be preserved and renovated into new housing units and a community center.

Nevermind. Just wasting more money
