I hope your friends saying it's 'crazy' to go to Brazil don't live in BR or NO. I'd like to go, but I'm afraid these things take a bit more planning than I've devoted to it.

Tried to plan a trip, ended up being a little to expensive after I crunched the numbers.

If your buddies travel / stay in a group they will be fine. Most crime occurs when someone is by themselves.

I'm not going, but I've been to Brazil.

You need to do your research, and I wouldn't advise trying to do it as cheaply as possible (though, this might vary with where you intend to go or who you intend to go with). But, as long as you have really planned things out, you will be fine.

The favela seems dangerous. Granted the only experience I have there is from call of duty.

Brazil will beat the shite out of Qatar that's for sure. 2018 being I'm Russia and well, we know how crazy those Russians can be.

one of my wifes good friends and her husband were in town this weekend for a wedding. he was telling me about one of his best friends who had recently gotten a job offer for a fairly high ranking position at aramark to go down to brazil and work from the confed cup all the way through the world cup.

they had to go in and meet with the security people because they were both white and aramark wanted to brief this guy and his wife on their safety concerns. my buddies friend told the company that if he were to accept the job that he would need 24 hour security, as well as a driver, so that they would feel safe. aramark agreed and their plans were set.

he got a call a few weeks later and aramark said that they felt like his wife was too great of a security risk - specifically, that she was at a high risk of being raped - even with body guards, and they did not want to chance it.

i'd like to go, but i'm going to sit this one out.

Or they chose someone else, and this is the story he's using to save face.

Brazil *can be* dangerous. But the OP will be fine during the World Cup. How many folks got raped/murdered/dismembered in South Africa?

The biggest chance the OP has of getting raped is having his a-hole reamed out by airfare and hotels.

Sounds like Brazil might be more rough than South Africa.

My understanding (read: a few internet articles) is that the bad parts are as bad as SA, the good parts are as good or better.

I would love to go to Brazil next year though although I won't be. During the WC, it is going to be much safer, plus Brazil is improving as a whole as long as you stay out of the favelas and aren't by yourself... which isn't any different than places in the US

i realize this is anectodal, but it is at least food for thought

quote:

A night out on the town turned into a nightmare after an American woman was gang raped and beaten aboard a public transport van while her French boyfriend was handcuffed, hit with a crowbar and forced to watch the attacks, police said.

quote:

Braga said the two foreigners, who were in Brazil as students, took a public transport van similar to those often used as a faster alternative to the city's bus fleet. The pair were heading from Rio's Copacabana beach neighborhood to the nightlife hot spot of Lapa in downtown Rio.

i'm sure this will be a route taken many times by world cup attendees.

quote:

Foreigners are more often the targets of muggings and petty crime in Rio, with assaults a particular problem on public transit. Last year, a woman was raped on a moving bus in broad daylight in a widely publicized case, and the Rio subway has special women-only cars to help prevent such attacks. More than 5,300 cases of sexual assault were reported in Brazil between January and June 2012, according to the country's Health Ministry.

I'm def going. You are always gonna hear horror stories such as girls kidnapped and held for years or mass school shootings. Brazil can be dangerous, but that month the the country will do everythingin it's power not to have such incidents. Stay where the crowds are and don't be an idiot.

I'll be making the trip for a couple of weeks, hopefully with a few friends.

Planning on hitting up Rio early before the first round when prices may be cheaper, then going to Natal where there are likely some not-as-popular matches, cheaper things and nice beaches with year round warm weather.

Only two things holding me back right now are the fact that I am about to blow a shitton of money going to Europe, and that I just watched City of God this past weekend. Also, an internship could prevent me from going.
