Why NBC passed on 'Mulaney' pilot this season

From AV Club
This type of thing does not bode well for the future of comedy on TV.
Mulaney was produced by Lorne Michaels, starred John Mulaney, with Martin Short and Elliot Gould as part of the cast.

NBC passed on Mulaney because though it was liked by “comedy geeks,” NBC executives didn’t like it. Why? Well, EW suggests because NBC is going for a “family theme” in its comedies and “moving away from smarter-narrower-snarkier titles.”

This was ultimately going to happen. NBC has had smarter comedies for years and is getting murdered by lowest common denominator CBS.
They had to shift that way, eventually.

Not sure who pissed in your cornflakes this morning, but was it necessary to come in and shite on something you undoubtedly have never seen?

It's the TV board. I made my decision and I'm sticking to it.
This show sucks.
Seriously, who is John Mulaney? Is this the next Tosh, Louis C.K., Mitch Hedberg, etc that I should know already?

I like Martin Short and Gould, but I'm not upset with them passing on this. Knowing nothing about the show, it still seems like it would appeal to a smaller niche.

If it is anything like Portlandia NBC prolly made a good decision. If it is like Community, then they made a mistake.
Smart and Snarky has be good as well.

It seems that way. The move was surprising though because it was generating the most internet buzz and it has Lorne Michaels backing it.
This thread is only somewhat meant to comment on the actual show that was passed up. The big thing is the reasoning why.

The Cosby Show, and tons of others say hello.

The word "usually" says hello right back to you.

Yeah, and how's chasing the "family" market working out? They tried that last season, and they alienated the few fans they had by gutting a beloved though lowly rated show and replacing it with even worse rated shows.
At this point, the smart decision is to consolidate the few positives the network has left. And while the Thursday lineup no longer gets huge ratings, it gets consistent ratings from really loyal fans, which means you can make money on the back end through syndication and DVD's. But they are going to piss that away too, to chase a market that they failed to court last year and the year before.
NBC is a f'n mess. To accuse them of being smart is crazy talk.
ETA: Also, why alienate Lorne Micheals, who is responsible for about the only NBC property not in the tank right now, and the mentor to a huge section of comedic talent?

A couple years ago, their Thursday night lineup was Community, P&R, 30 Rock, and the Office, with Outsourced mixed in.
That's a lot of critical acclaim there, and even some commercial success as well. But it wasn't enough so they started jacking around the orders for P&R, Community and 30 Rock.
