Hal Hunter game

just a team cutting it loose, breaking out of its shell, and taking out all its frustration

night and day difference from a half empty stadium against UH the week before

It was the 2001 Alabama game.

LSU went 8-4 in 2000. LSU should have been 8-4/7-5 or better in 1998 and 1999 with the amount of close games they played. All they really improved on in 2000 was playing as a team and finishing games.

In 2001 the team started out sluggish and the offense was sputtering. They exploded at Alabama and didn't look back.

That continued into 2002 but then Mauck got injured. That team probably wins 10 games with Mauck at QB. Then 2003 was even better. etc.

Oh no, I watched Thomas Dunson play LB. Am I gonna get a phone call soon telling me I'm gonna die in 7 days?

After the game a pissed off Tennessee fan walking out the stadium told me "The difference between Tennessee and LSU is that we would NEVER storm the field if we beat LSU."

I wonder how he feels now.

I think about that often.

I would say the event that started the climb up was Dinardo's signing of Kevin Faulk....followed by the Poulan Weedeater Bowl win over Michigan State and little Nicky....

I don't understand the argument of Kevin Faulk....we were on the decline towards the end of his career and had to start all over after this debacle of 1999.

The signing of Michael Clayton and Marcus spears as a package deal brought us much more success while they were on campus and we have continued that success over a decade later. We have landed almost every major Louisiana target since.

Could you imagine the backlash if we were heading into the Arkansas game winless in the SEC? This is why I appreciate 00-04 so much. It really did "bring the magic back" and has made growing up a tiger fan an awesome experience for me.

That team would have played Georgia for the SEC Championship.

We would have destroyed UGA in 02. We were 6-1 and just had manhandled UF in the swamp when Mauck hurt his foot. With the #1 rushing defense in the land. Musa Smith wouldn't have rushed for 50 yds in the seccg.

Yeah, I think of 2001 as the landmark signing class, with Spears and Clayton as the headliners.

2003 LSU vs. Georgia was the game where we really turned the corner into elite status as a program, IMO.

Not to diminish the importance of other games already mentioned in the thread. I think they were all significant in the progressive rise of the program.

this ....if you go in the locker room there is a big overhead picture that covers a large wall that was once just painted white....according to one of the trainers they wanted to put something on that wall because it was so plain looking...so they/someone decided to use the overhead picture of the stadium from the Tennessee game.....the reasoning was they felt that was the turning point of the program.....thats what I was told when we got to take a tour of the locker room the morning of the 07 Florida game....what a great day that was....

What is really painful is watching Rohan Davey light it up in this game, only to go back behind Josh Booty for pretty much all of 2000.

That wasn't Faulk's lack of running skills, it was Lou Tepper's lack of defensive Coordinator skills. Tenn win in 2000 was huge, I'd have to go with that one also.

The idea that LSU would have been some powerhouse in 2002 if Mauck hadn't gotten hurt is one of the biggest misconceptions that is constantly perpetuated on this board.

I was at The Swamp when we beat UF in 2002, and yeah it was an awesome win after the Sprurrier dominance of the previous decade. But we had a pick six and a fake FG for a TD (Bech FTW) and that was a 5 loss ZOOK team, not the Spurrier team that annihilated us the year before.

We were 5-1 after the Florida win, with wins over Citadel, Miami OH, Miss St, and ULL after laying an egg against V Tech to start the year. Mauck had less than 800 total yards passing at the end of the Florida game which was the 6th game of the season, although he did have a nice 9/2 TD/INT ratio (3 TDs against Miami OH, 3 against UL, 2 against Florida).

After that, we beat a South Carolina team that wasn't bowl eligible, got DESTROYED by Auburn (31-0 halfway through 4th quarter) and Alabama (shutout and put 500 yards on our D), needed the Bluegrass Miracle to beat Kentucky, got a 1 point win at home over 6-6 Ole Miss, and had an epic last second collapse against Arkansas with a trip to ATL still on the line because the West sucked so bad outside of Bama who was banned from postseason play.

That Georgia team, which is still Richt's best team ever, would have arse raped that 2002 LSU team whether Mauck was playing or not.

Not sure where you're getting the "#1 rush D in the land", but the defense was just not very good, which was clear once we got to the SEC schedule. V Tech and Kentucky ran for almost 200, Auburn and Arkansas ran for over 200, and Bama ran for over 300 on that D.

That 13-1 Georgia team would have absolutely beat the shite out of 02 LSU.

That is still one of the more remarkable turnarounds that I've ever seen, Saban turning that awful 01 and mediocre at best 02 D into the juggernaut that was the 03 D. Complete turnaround.

As for the OP, I know UT in 2000 is widely considered the starting point after being embarrassed by UAB the week before.

But things got real in 2001 against Auburn. That was the first time we won a game with something really on the line. That was a play in game for the SECCG, and something changed in Tiger Stadium that night. Played in December after being postponed due to 9/11, Auburn stomping on the eye and opening the game with an onside kick after the pre game unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Went on to dominate that game that was not nearly as close as the 27-14 final score indicated.

One of the most overlooked wins in LSU history IMO.
